The Department of American Culture was founded as Program in American Culture in 1952 through the efforts of Professor Joe Lee Davis to study American life. The program initially served as a hub for interdisciplinary courses. In the 1970s the program and coursework expanded to include the study of women and minority groups with an emphasis on Latino Studies as well as art and media studies. The Program became a Department in 2012. Records include administrative files, directors' correspondence, committee minutes, curriculum material, topical files, and material on faculty members and their activities.

It also features materials documenting the interdisciplinary connections between the department and other schools, programs, and departments at the University of Michigan. The collection includes records from two of the Department of American Culture's ethnic studies programs, the Latino/a Studies Program and the Arab and Muslim American Studies Program.

Department in the College of Literature Science & Arts of the University of Michigan, origins trace to 1844 when chemistry was first taught at the university; includes scattered early records ca. 1866-1930, faculty minutes, records of experiments, and files on sponsored lectures, colloquia and symposia.

The Department of Chemistry records include scattered early documents, records of experiments, 1885-1909, committee minutes, building files, personnel records, enrollment statistics, records of colloquia, lectures and symposia, and Center for Catalysis and Surface Science Files. The records of the Department of Chemistry measure 5.0 linear feet and date from 1866 to 1994. The bulk of the materials, however, are from 1934 to 1994.

The University of Michigan Department of Classical Studies traces its origin to the 1840s language offerings in Latin and Greek. The current department dates back to the 1946 when the separate Latin and Greek programs were merged and the curriculum broadened to feature more classical art and archaeology and classic civilization courses. Records reflect the department's administrative functions, as well as their extensive public programming through lecture series, symposia, and international projects. This collection primarily contains materials from after the reunification of Latin and Greek under Classical Studies although some 19th century material is present.

The Department of Classical Studies records contain a wide range documentation of the administrative functions of various aspects of the department. The bulk of material is after the fusion of Greek and Latin into one department, dating after the mid-1940s and extending through the mid 1990s. These files document many different kinds of departmental activities including lectureships, curriculum reviews, symposia, and faculty affairs. It also includes documentation of programs in which the Department of Classical Studies participated, such as the Interdisciplinary Program in Classical Art and Archaeology, and the Great Books Program.

The records are divided into six series: Administrative Files, Department of Greek, Department of Latin, Events, Faculty Meeting Minutes, and Publications. Within these series are several sub-series, most notably the Jerome Lectureship Committee within the Events series.

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (University of Michigan) Publications (0.8 linear feet) include bibliographies, brochures, directories, flyers and newsletters dating from 1933 to the present. These publications primarily document the activities of the department, faculty, staff, students and alumni. In addition, there is information on the summer geology program run by the University of Michigan at Camp Davis in Jackson, Wyoming and Mill Springs, Kentucky.

Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences Publications are divided into two series: Unit Publications and Topical Publications. The bulk of the publications document the Department of Geological Sciences.

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology was founded in 2001 when the Department of Biology split into two separate departments, the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. The collection spans from 1998-2009 with the bulk of the material being from 2001-2009. The collection contains correspondence, administrative information, documents from the transitional team, and publications.

The Helen Zell Writers' Program was established in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan in 1982 as the Zell Visiting Writers' Series within the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Program. The program hosts poets and fiction writers to the University of Michigan campus every year. The program changed its name from the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Program to Helen Zell Writers' Program in 2013. The records contain audiocassettes and videotapes (VHS) for the Zell Visiting Writers' Series from Fall 1999 to Winter 2003, and digital videos (MiniDV) for Master of Fine Arts Program Alumni readings from 2002. Additional files containing correspondence, photographs, and publicity materials for the Zell Visiting Writers' Series are also included.

The department provides education to graduates in family medicine, operates family practice centers in Michigan as part of the residency program, and conducts research. Material includes accreditation and annual reports, correspondence, departmental reviews, residency training material, photographs, publications, topical files, and web archives.

Germanic Languages and Literature became an independent department at the University of Michigan in 1887, prior to that German language was taught under Modern Languages. Course offerings expanded to include German, Swedish, Norwegian, Gothic, Netherlands, and Yiddish. Departmental records pertaining to curriculums staffing, events, faculty, and the operation of the department. Minutes date from 1929 to 1941, and 1985-2000. Faculty files include William H. Bennett, Francis Brown, Martin Dyck, John W. Eaton, Emery George, Otto Graf, Leta Lewis, Henry Nordmeyer, Clarence K. Pott, Walter Reichart, Alice Tramm, Frederick B. Wahr, and Norman Willey.

The material is described as one collection and is primarily comprised of records related to departmental administrative functions, events and publications, curriculum, and faculty. The Department of History of Art was originally established as the Department of Fine Arts in 1911. The collection ranges from 1946 to 2013 and primarily contains personnel files, newsletters and other departmental publications, and meeting minutes of the Executive Committee and Faculty Meetings.
