Barbara Bassett McIver papers, 1961-2011 (majority within 1961-1964)

A Detroit, Mich. native, Barbara Bassett McIver was part of the second cohort of Peace Corps volunteers and part of the first Peace Corps group to go to the Philippines. The bulk of the material is dated between 1961 and 1964, and includes McIver's diary, a scrapbook, letters home, and ephemera relating to McIver's experiences in the Philippines. Also included in the collection are Peace Corps 25th and 50th anniversary program materials.

The bulk of the material in the collection relates to McIver's time as a volunteer in the Peace Corps. The majority of items dated between 1961 and 1964 include McIver's correspondence (mostly letters to her mother) her diary, and a scrapbook. McIver's letters and her diary describe her daily activities, thoughts, and concerns regarding the Philipines, the Filipino culture, the Peace Corps, and other volunteers. McIver's scrapbook contains maps of the Philippines, photographs of McIver, the Peace Corps volunteers, Filipino students and citizens. Of note (within the scrapbook) are two signed letters to McIver from President John F. Kennedy and four letters from R. Sargent Shriver, the first director of the Peace Corps, as well as two letters from Congresswoman Martha W. Griffiths (D-Michigan; 1955-1974) commending McIver for her work in the Philippines. The scrapbook also contains newspaper clippings (scattered dates), a 1967 Outstanding Young Women of America certificate, a 1961 Peace Corps Volunteer certificate, and a 1961 Pennsylvania State-Peace Corps Training Completion certificate, among other items.

The collection also includes the Peace Corps 25th and 50th anniversary program announcements and itinerary.

Barbara C. Aswad Papers, 1962-2000 (majority within 1975-2000)

Professor of anthropology at Wayne State University, active in issues and organizations specific to the Arab-American population of southeastern Michigan, particularly Dearborn, Michigan. Topical files document Arab and Arab-American culture and life. Organizational files document Aswad's involvement in such organizations as the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.

The papers of Barbara Aswad consist primarily of materials relating to her involvement and activism within the Arab-American communities of metropolitan Detroit. The bulk of the collection chronicles her associations with both national and community-based Arab-American organizations, most notably the Arab-American Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS) of Dearborn, Michigan. The collection has been divided into two series: Topical and Organizations.

Barbara MacAdam papers, 1957-2011 (majority within 1980-2005)

Barbara MacAdam was a librarian for the University of Michigan Library system from 1979 to 2011. Titles have included head of Undergraduate Library, head of Reference and Instruction, and Associate University Librarian for Public Services. The collection documents projects and operation of the University Library during MacAdam's work there, as well as course material from her position as lecturer within the School of Information and College of Literature, Science, and the Arts

The Barbara MacAdam Papers document projects, programs, and events undertaken by the University of Michigan Library system during MacAdam's work there, which included almost 15 years as head of the Undergraduate Library and 10 years as head of Reference and Instruction at the Graduate Library. It also includes course material from her position as lecturer within the School of Information (formerly School of Information and Library Studies) and College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (Honors Program and Department of Communication). The records are arranged into nine series: Biographical, Course Material, Facilities, Graduate Library South Building Renovation, Mirlyn Implementation (2004), Miscellaneous Library Material, Projects/Collaborations, Projects/Committees, and Undergraduate Library.

Barbara Murphy Papers, 1963-1999

This collection contains correspondence, news clippings, writings, manuscripts, and ephemera related to Barbara Murphy's involvement in student protest movements at the University of Michigan in the 1960s. Also included are reports, manuscripts, administrative materials, and correspondence generated during her subsequent career at the University of Michigan, primarily concerning her work to advance women's rights at the university.

This collection contains correspondence, news clippings, writings, manuscripts, and ephemera related to Barbara Murphy's involvement in student protest movements at the University of Michigan in the 1960s. Also included are reports, manuscripts, administrative materials, and correspondence generated during her subsequent career at the University of Michigan, primarily concerning her work to advance women's rights at the university.

The correspondence largely consists of mailings sent to Murphy from former SDS members coordinating reunions, particularly the 1977 reunion. It also includes mail sent between other SDS members (not Murphy herself), including Alan Haber, the organization's first president. Notable is the correspondence concerning the 1965 anti-Vietnam War Teach-In, the first of a number of such events across the country in which professors cancelled classes and gave antiwar seminars for 12 hours. Additionally, there is a small number of interdepartmental letters from Murphy's career at the University, as well as information and appeals concerning various social causes.

Before her passing, Murphy had begun to organize her files herself. The files she pulled together have been maintained in their original order with their original titles transcribed. Most of these folders concern Murphy's professional career.

The Administrative records subseries is grouped by relevant organization or institution. Materials within folders are organized chronologically. Papers include organizational agendas and minutes, funding proposals, reunion planning, and policy guidelines. Most are related to Murphy's career at the University.

The Printed Materials series is grouped by type of printed material. Materials within folders are organized chronologically. The journals, newsletters, manuscripts and essays largely consist of writings by SDS members or other members of the New Left. Ephemera comprises a variety of pamphlets, broadsides, flyers, and stickers distributed by student activist organizations. Most relate to antiwar and anti-draft activism, particularly the 1965 teach-in. The majority of research reports and surveys were generated by researchers at the University of Michigan and concern gender equality on campus. The news clippings concern both SDS and academic women's issues.

Finally, the SDS files folder contains a handful of SDS papers that did not easily fit into other folders, including a booklet of protest songs, a biographical booklet about former SDS president Paul Potter, and a copy of an FBI memorandum regarding surveillance of the New Left in Ann Arbor.

Barnett Roads Collection, 1808-2006

This collection represents materials gathered by Leroy Barnett for his book, A Drive Down Memory Lane: The Named State and Federal highways of Michigan, published by Priscilla Press in 2004. The documents included in this accession were mainly derived from statute books, legislative journals, government records, transportation periodicals, newspapers, and period cartographic materials.

The contents of each folder include brief histories for each trunk line that bears a name and number. These histories formed the basis of A Drive Down Memory Lane. A very small part of the information contained in this collection was not used in the book, as the material related to highways that ultimately did not fall within the purview of the study.

Barton-McFarlane Neighborhood Association, 1953-2014 (with gaps)

The majority of records in this series are from 1980-2004. BMNA was comprised of members as well as local businesses, and a significant portion of the records can point to the names and addresses of neighborhood residents, which can track historical residency in the neighborhood. These records also show a portion of Detroit's city planning, particularly in relation to the Coalition on Temporary Shelter (COTS).

Beni and Franklin Rosemont Correspondence Collection, 1973-2016

Correspondence between the donor, Beni, and Franklin and Penelope Rosemont, who were surrealist artists, writers, activists, and publishers.

This small collection primarily consists of correspondence between Beni and Franklin Rosemont regarding the collecting of IWW and Surrealist publications. Beni was initially interested in receiving more of the Rosemonts' publications in Arsenal. As their correspondence became more robust, both men collaborated on a search for materials relating to various figures in the history of IWW publications. In the 2000s, their correspondence moved to e-mails that include a network of activists, librarians, and scholars invested in the discovery and preservation of labor history materials. After Franklin Rosemont's death in 2007, Beni continued to collaborate with the curator of the Labadie Collection to acquire rare materials related to the Rosemonts' own activities.

Benjamin Brown collection, 1817-2000 (majority within 1829-1844)

The Benjamin Brown collection is made up of correspondence, documents, and artifacts related to the showman's career as a circus owner in the early 1800s. Many of the letters relate to his journey to Egypt between 1838 and 1840, as he attempted to procure giraffes for an American menagerie company; to his other travels; and to the contemporary American circus industry.

The Benjamin Brown collection is made up of correspondence, documents, and artifacts related to the showman's career as a circus owner in the early 1800s.

Letters, documents, and printed materials concern Brown's early ventures as a show owner, including correspondence and financial records pertaining to his travels in the Caribbean and to the northeast coast of South America in the early 1830s. These materials document the difficulties of transporting exotic animals by sea, the type of equipment necessary to run a circus, and other logistical issues.

A later group of letters and documents reflects Brown's experiences in Egypt, where he traveled as an agent of the June, Titus, Angevine & Company, attempting to purchase giraffes. Many of these letters are from Stebbins B. June, who was also in Egypt at the time, and several items relate to George R. Gliddon, United States consul in Cairo. Brown's friend Gerard Crane wrote about Brown's business affairs in New York, and frequently reported the increasingly frail health of Brown's father. Benjamin Brown received a letter from P. T. Barnum, who asked him to find a pair of fortune tellers for Barnum's museum. He also inquired about locating a pony small enough to accommodate his performer Tom Thumb (June 29, 1843). While in London, Brown frequently received letters from his sister, Eudocia Brown Noyes, who wrote of the Brown family farm and provided other news from Somers, New York.

The collection includes playbills and broadsides advertising Brown's circus; Brown's marriage license (March 20, 1841); a pencil sketch of Brown; two passports; and three fragments of an Arabic-language scroll, offering protection to the bearer. Later material includes newspaper clippings from 1879, 1880, and 1931, on Brown's life and career, as well as an audio tape of an interview with his grandson, Benjamin Brown.

Box 2 of the collection includes correspondence, documents, printed items, photographs, and audio recordings related to the history of Benjamin Brown, the circus, and Somers, New York. Principally organized around the career and research of Carrie Brown Rorer (1903-1969), President of the Somers Historical Society and Benjamin F. Brown's great-grandaughter, the material provides insight into public history, memory, and research on the circus. Included is a typed document, "Circus History: Recollections by Benjamin Brown (1877-1962) as told to Carrie Brown Roher, (1903-1969), who was one of his three daughters," which details memories of Benjamin F. Brown and family stories about him.
