Missionaries to China, 1920-1931; George T. Blydenburgh was the superintendent of a new hospital in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province. Correspondence to family members describing daily life, family matters, and news of the hospital's progress; photographs, newspaper clippings, and glass lantern slides documenting the Blydenburgh family's experiences (bulk 1920-1931). Statements and descriptions of incidents related to military campaigns in Nanjing, Shanghai, and Nanchang. Writings and outlines about life in China (1921-1934). Marion P. Blydenburgh lived in China from 1920-1931 with her husband, George T. Blydenburgh, who was the superintendent of the Nanchang General Hospital (also known as the Susan Toy Ensign Memorial Hospital) in Jiangxi Province through the Board of Foreign Missions of the Methodist Episcopal Church. This collection contains correspondence written to family members in the United States describing daily life, family matters, and news of the hospital's progress as well as photographs, newspaper clippings, and glass lantern slides documenting the Blydenburgh family's experiences.

First-hand accounts from George Blydenburgh, Marion Blydenburgh, and others of incidents related to military campaigns in Nanjing, Shanghai, and Nanchang are among materials in this collection. Also included are annual reports from the Nanchang General Hospital, publications from the Nanking [Nanjing] Language School, as well as scrolls of woodblock prints, calligraphy, and painting. Visual Materials, Circa 1920-1931, 1998

The Visual Materials series (1.75 linear feet, 1 oversize folder) is organized by genre. This series contains a box of glass lantern slides, loose photographs and photographic postcards, as well as seven photograph albums that document the Blydenburgh family's experiences in China. Generally, the subjects of the photographic media in this series are individual and group portraits, interiors and exteriors of dwellings, as well as various modes of transportation. Additional subjects include tourism and travel documenting landscapes and landmarks; life in cities, towns, and the country; and the Nanchang General Hospital (also known as the Susan Toy Ensign Memorial Hospital).

Additional subjects are present in the photograph albums. Of note is documentation of the Nanchang city wall being pulled down in 1926, which is in the third album, Nanchang, Kiangsi, China. In the fourth album, which is untitled and undated, there are architectural drawings and a photograph of a stone house designed by George Blydenburgh and built in Kuling, in the Methodist Mission. The sixth album, Refugee Book No. 1 contains photographs of the Blydenburgh family's time spent in Shanghai, China; Nagasaki, Japan; and Korea after being evacuated from Nanchang in March 1927. Also included in this album is a photograph with the caption "Major General Duncan reviewing British troops just arriving across the Garden Bridge, Shanghai, Spring 1927." The seventh album, Refugee Book No. 2 contains photographs documenting the Blydenburgh family's time spent in Mukden (Shenyang), Peking (Beijing), Tientsin (Tianjin), and Peitaiho (Beidaihe) including photographs of the Great Wall of China.

One oversize panoramic photograph of approximately 150 adults and children, which was given to George and Marion Blydenburgh by the Nanchang Auxiliary Committee in April 1931, is part of the Visual Materials series. Also part of this series are color prints made in 1998 that are copies of glass lantern slides from circa 1920-1931. The glass lantern slides are arranged in eight partitions and two cartons mirroring their physical arrangement in their original box. Furthermore, the Visual Materials series includes six scrolls featuring calligraphy, painting, and woodblock prints, two of which are both titled 2 men in boat in storm - Man on shore - Wood Block - Black & White.

Native of Milan, Michigan who served with the 131st Field Artillery unit during World War II and spent three and a half years as a Japanese Prisoner of War forced to work on the Burma Railroad. Correspondence, clippings, photographs, military records, scrapbooks, digital materials.

Materials include correspondence, clippings, maps, records related to Falk's military service and photographs. The series also contains information related to the Lost Battalion Association and efforts to document the experiences of American POWs following the war.

The book features a narrative about his childhood, wartime experiences and post-war life in Milford, Michigan. Much of the narrative information was compiled from an interview with Falk's sister Eva in 2012. George H. Forsyth (1901-1991) was an archeologist, architectural, and art historian who led archeological expeditions to Angers, France, Mount Sinai, Egypt, and countries in the Near East including Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. Forsyth was a professor at the University of Michigan, chairman of the History of Art Department and director of the Kelsey Museum. The collection is comprised of personal materials, teaching materials, and extensive documentation of George's personal travel and archeological expeditions to Europe and the Near East such as correspondence, field notes, and visual materials.

The George H. Forsyth papers primarily document Forsyth's career. The collection includes personal materials, biographical information, daybooks, family photographs, teaching and lecture notes, and extensive documentation of George's personal travel and archeological expeditions to Europe and the Near East. Material related to expeditions includes field notebooks, photographs, negatives, architectural drawings, correspondence, and manuscripts of various publication activities.

George Forsyth died prior to completing the publication of his landmark drawings of Saint Catherine's Monastery (Mount Sinai, Egypt). Publication efforts were continued posthumously by his wife, Dr. Ilene H. Forsyth, an art historian and professor at the University of Michigan.

Church of Saint Martin Expeditions (Angers, France), 1912-2015 (majority within 1929-1951)

The Church of Saint Martin Expeditions (Angers, France) series documents the expeditions led by George Forsyth between 1926 and 1936 to Angers, France, to excavate the Church of Saint Martin, built in the ninth century by the son of Charlemagne. Forsyth led several expeditions to St. Martin resulting in the discovery of rare religious artifacts and important architectural data published in The Church of St. Martin at Angers: The architectural history of the site from the Roman Empire to the French Revolution. The excavations in collaboration with William A. Campbell.

The series is arranged in four subseries: Correspondence, Field Work, Visual Materials, and Publication Activities. Materials include field notebooks detailing excavation activities, notes, drawings, and reference material; visual materials such as measured drawings, photographs of the church exterior and interior, and 162 envelopes of negatives of excavation activities; and annotated manuscript drafts, correspondence, and printed materials related to publication efforts. Files in each subseries are arranged alphabetically.

The Michigan-Princeton-Alexandria Expeditions to Saint Catherine's Monastery (Mount Sinai, Egypt) series comprises the bulk of the collection. This series is arranged into five subseries: Correspondence, Travel Preparations, Field Work, Visual Materials, and Publication Activities. The Michigan-Princeton-Alexandria Expeditions are typically referred to as "Mt. Sinai" and occurred in four campaigns in 1958, 1960, 1963, and 1965. Materials of particular note include correspondence with Kurt Weitzmann, of Princeton University who co-led the expeditions, and Fred Anderegg, UM director of photography; trip preparatory materials such as equipment lists and medical supply information; field notebooks (two volumes); full-scale architectural drawings of the monastery and surrounding fortress, which were cataloged during Ilene's posthumous publication efforts (Box 9); and extensive repurposed source material, such as photographs, negatives, drawings, and field notes, reproduced and annotated for various publication activities. This material is described more fully at the subseries level.
