Chairman's Topical Files, 1951-1981

The bulk of the records in the Chairman's Topical Files, 1951-1981 date from the chairmanship of John W. Henderson (1968-1978). The records describe programs, facilities, and affiliated clinics and hospitals. Significant programs represented in the records include the External Disease Service, Lens Dispensary, Low Vision Clinic, Michigan Lions Eye Bank, and Parkview-Retina Service.

Materials on the renovation of Parkview and the design of the Turner addition including floor plans are located in the Outpatient Clinic, Parkview Planning (1977-1978) and Parkview Relocation (1973-1978) files.

Records documenting the department's affiliation with various hospitals and regional facilities include Ford Hospital, Milan Federal Prison, Plymouth State Home and Training Center, Veterans Administration Hospital, Wayne County General Hospital, and Ypsilanti Regional Hospital.

An especially rich source for information relating to glaucoma can be found in the research papers of Harold Falls (1955-1972). Additional research related materials are located in the Thursday Morning Conference folder (1972-1977).

The Paul R. Lichter Topical Files, 1978-2003 document Lichter's tenure as chair of the Department of Ophthalmology. It richly details Lichter's involvement with the construction of the W.K. Kellogg Eye Center, his chairmanship of the department and touches upon his stint as editor-in -chief of Ophthalmology, the Journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The Lichter series includes three subseries: Administration, Personal Files, and W.K. Kellogg Eye Center.

The Administration files documents the organization and operations of the Department of Ophthalmology. The files includes annual reports which review the performance of the department and its faculty, meeting minutes from faculty retreats, and departmental review and strategic planning reports.

The Daniel G. Green Retirement Dinner and Book of Remembrances, 2003 folder includes photographs of Green's retirement party as well as a CD with photographs of the party. Green is a Professor Emeritus in the departments of Ophthalmology and Biomedical Engineering. His research interests include retinal physiology of visual adaptation and transgenic mice.

The Photographs folder includes pictures of doctors in the department of ophthalmology as well as architectural proofs of the W.K. Kellogg Eye Center

Charles A. Hill was African American pastor of Hartford Avenue Baptist Church (renamed Hartford Memorial Baptist Church in 1981) in Detroit, Michigan; collection includes church materials, scrapbooks and photographs, information collected about Hill and his activities by the Detroit Police Department, and family information.

The Charles A. Hill Family Papers are comprised of 2.7 linear feet and range in date from 1970 to 1981. The collection focuses primarily on the life and work of Charles A. Hill, Sr., although papers concerning other family members are also included. The collection is arranged into four series: Hartford Avenue Baptist Church, Charles A. Charles E. Cleland Native American research collection, 1970-2008, and undated

The collection includes mostly photocopies of materials generated by various lawsuits, and other materials documenting Native Americans of Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, and First Peoples of Ontario, Canada, their history, culture, and relationship with the presiding government.Tribes documented are noted in the subject headings.

The collection includes mostly undated photocopies of materials generated by various tribal lawsuits against states and the United States (US) government in the collection. Some of the materials date back to the 1780s, but they are not originals, they are photocopies mostly made in the 1970s-1990s or later. There are some original reports and court records created during the time period of 1970-2008. The collection is rich in and dense in documenting Native Americans of Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, and First Peoples of Ontario, Canada, their history, culture, and relationship with the presiding government.

The collection is in original order. It is organized alphabetically by series by tribe or community seeking tribal status, reservation boundary (KBIC) case, tax case, or for hunting and fishing rights (Voight or LCO case) (105 boxes, 102.5 cubic feet). Within each series there are various subseries which may include: calendar documents (reference documents in chronological order), Cleland reports and reports of others (un/published), Cleland’s testimony as an expert witness, reference documents and/or un/published sources including newspaper or journal articles, books, maps, government reports, laws, land, legal and tax records, correspondence, business or personal records, excerpts from journals, diaries, and accounts, treaties, various US or Canadian court documents, miscellaneous and/or related documents, footnotes, project files, transcriptions of oral histories, finding aids, various types of maps, sketches, and genealogical and/or family charts. Some materials are bound volumes and others are oversized materials. Tribes or communities represented in the collection include:

Also included are 5x8 inch notecards (4 boxes, 1.5 cubic foot), which usually document in one box each: KBIC, Grand Portage, MI and MN Chippewas, and Voigt.

Lastly, nine oversized folders (larger than legal-size, about .5 cubic foot) include mostly photocopies of a wide variety of maps, treaty signers, genealogy notes and family tree, and land claims.

All boxes in the collection are 1 cubic foot boxes except for the following: Boxes #15, 25, 68, 74-75 are .5 cubic foot boxes; Box #113 is .25 cubic foot box, Box #117 is really an Overszied folder; Boxes #119-122 are 5x8 inch index card boxes.

Materials were collected from a plethora of local, state, and national archives and historical institutions, as well as tribal archives, and various courts, both American and Canadian.

Abbreviations: Professor Cleland and his staff used numerous, and sometimes various, abbreviations for institutions, record groups and/or series names or other citations. Some of these were obvious to the processors, others were not. Many of these abbreviations are not identified in this finding aid. For example, enclosure is abbreviated multiple ways. These variations were retained during processing. Some of these variations are obvious and can be deduced by researchers from the materials.

Also, due to the length of the collection, a number of abbreviations and grammatical changes were implemented by the archivist.

The archivist also deleted: ["no reference" and "incomplete reference"], the, a, or an (articles) at the beginning of a title; Anonymous or Author unknown or a.u.; unknown dates, undated, ND, or n.d. and s.u. Marian also changed: Microfilm to micro and “and” to and; and abbreviated certain common words, as noted below, and the names of months.

Also, the original punctuation used varies. A few of the original folder labels were crossed out partially or entirely. These variations were retained during processing.

Processing Notes: Only a few duplicate copies were withdrawn from the collection. Several items which had suffered physical damage mostly due to mud or dirt stains or being badly crumpled or torn were copied and the originals were withdrawn from the collection. (The total withdrawn from this collection was less than .25 cubic ft.).

The vast majority of the collection was organized into series by tribal name or topic, foldered, and labeled before it came to the Clarke. Original folders were maintained in the collection. We endeavored as much as possible to duplicate the original label headings (which varied somewhat from series to series) in the Box and folder listing. Items that were not foldered were foldered by the archivist, and those that were unlabeled were identified and labeled by the archivist.

Charles Edwin Kent papers, 1944-1990 (majority within 1957-1980)

Charles Edwin Kent, a resident of Ann Arbor, Michigan, worked as an engineer, solving complex technological problems for Bendix Corporation for most of his career, first in the Systems Division, and later in the Aerospace Systems Division. Kent worked on automotive, communications, weaponry, and space research, as well as a number of other subjects. The collection encompasses material primarily from his college years through his career. The series in the collection are Personal Files and Professional Files. Papers primarily include research notes, internal company memorandums, and research reports.

The Charles Edwin Kent papers are comprised of materials documenting his professional and personal life.

Charles F. Cannell papers, 1946-2001 (majority within 1974-1998)

Charles Cannell was a social scientist, professor, and co-founder of the Survey Research Center at the University of Michigan. Papers consist of project files, research proposals and grant applications, conference presentations, teaching material, and biographical information, the majority of which span 1974 to 1998. The bulk of the collection represents work on an array of projects regarding interviewing and survey methodology, including several projects on the use of technology, such as the telephone, in the interviewing process.

The Charles F. Cannell Papers measure 2.5 linear feet and range from 1946 to 2001. The bulk of the material, however, dates from 1974 to 1998. Papers consist of project files, research proposals and grant applications, conference presentations, teaching material, and biographical information, the majority of which span 1974 to 1998. The bulk of the collection represents work on an array of projects regarding interviewing and survey methodology, including several projects on the use of technology, such as the telephone, in the interviewing process. The papers have been divided into four series: Biographical Files; Conferences and Seminars Files; Projects and Proposals Files; and Topical Files.

Charles F. Frey papers, 1968-2013 (majority within 1971-1973)

Charles F. Frey was a Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan, chairman of the Michigan Emergency Services Health Council, founder of the University Association for Emergency Medical Services, chairman of the American College of Surgeons' Michigan Committee on Trauma, and a member of the Washtenaw County Emergency Medical Service Health Council. Frey is known for his work in the development of emergency management systems at a state and national level, for the development of medical specializations in trauma, and for pancreatic surgery research. The collection includes correspondence, reports, records of emergency medicine organizations, and Frey's autobiographical account of his work in emergency medicine.

The Charles F. Frey papers document his work during the 1960s and 1970s in the development of emergency services, training, and policies in Michigan as well as nationwide. He participated in these efforts through organizations such as the Michigan Emergency Services Health Council (MESH), The American College of Surgeons, the University Association for Emergency Medical Services, the Michigan Advisory Council, and the Washtenaw County Emergency Medical Service Health Council. The majority of the collection is related to MESH and the University Association for Emergency Medical Services as Frey was key in the establishment and development of those organizations. The contents of the collection are paper materials and are arranged in three series: Michigan Emergency Services Health Council, Emergency and Trauma Organizations, and Biographical and Personal.

Charles F. Holman Papers, 1973-1986

Detroit, Michigan, attorney and legal counselor; files reflecting his activity in the Michigan State NAACP

Mr. Holman's papers primarily reflect his activity in the Michigan State NAACP. The papers consist of 1.3 linear feet of material containing letters, memoranda, minutes, reports, and printed material documenting Holman's work in the state and national NAACP organizations.

The papers are organized in three series: Correspondence, arranged chronologically, 1973 and 1977-1986; NAACP Files, 1970-1986, arranged alphabetically; and Topical Files, 1978-1986, arranged alphabetically. Since the files are closely interrelated, the researcher is encouraged to review the files in all three series.
