Student Government Council (University of Michigan) records, 1912-1976

Records, 1912-1975, of the Student Government Council and predecessor student government agencies at the University of Michigan. Contains minutes, clippings and topical files concerning, in part, black studies and black student organizations. Also papers of Laing Study Committee, a university group concerned with the study and evaluation of student government.

The records encompass a broad range of documents from successive student government agencies including the Student Council, Student Legislature and Student Senate. Included are minutes, petitions, election materials and results, financial records, and correspondence. The most extensive records are those dating from 1960 on. Topical files from that period include reports on university housing, classified research, campus security, minority affairs, and the University Cellar. Included also are the minutes of the Liang Study Committee (1953/1954) and reports from the Office of Student Affairs on housing and student conduct (1966-1969).

Student Test Data, 1927-1936, 1938-1947

The Student Test Data, 1927-1947 series (1 ft.) consists of bound volumes of test data recorded from Freshman Examinations (1927-1936), later termed Orientation Week Testing (1938-1947). Records are from the Bureau of Educational Research (1927-1930), Office of the Director of Educational Investigations (1930-1945) and the Bureau of Psychological Services (1945-1947). Records in this series are restricted due to the presence of name-identifiable test results. Data and analysis from the tests was published in 1940 in the publication A Statistical Summary of the Records of Students Entering the University of Michigan as Freshmen in the decade 1927-1936 by P.S. Dwyer, Charlotte Horner and C.S. Yoakum (Michigan Administrative Studies Volume 1 Number 4).

The largest series - Subject files (24.3 linear ft.;1923-1976) is an alphabetical arrangement of files containing correspondence, organizational affiliation materials, and other documents relating to her professional career and interests. As expected, the bulk of the Subject files fall within such headings as Aging and Gerontology, Children's Fund of Michigan, Grand Valley State College, the Merrill-Palmer School, and the National Research Council Committee on Maternal and Child Feeding and Food and Nutrition Board.

The Subject Files, 1937-1985 series contains correspondence, reports, notes, proposals, meeting minutes and agendas, and course materials. The documents concern all aspects of his career, including his work at the Library of Congress; Documentation, Inc.; the National Research Council; General Electric; Indiana University Library School; and as President of Cloyd Dake Gull and Associates. Also included are materials on his professional activities with such organizations as the American Documentation Institute and the International Federation for Documentation, and on the workshops on information science which he taught at various universities. The series is arranged alphabetically by subject.

The Sunrise Cooperative Farm Community records document the organization and operation of the farming community. Suomi College Finnish-American collection, 1880-1972

The Finnish Collection consists of 100 reels of microfilm concerning Finnish-American Churches, Labor Societies, Temperance Organizations, and other materials from the United States and Canada. The collection is the result of a joint project between the Bentley Library, Suomi College (now Finlandia University), and the University of Turku, Finland, coordinated in 1974-75.

The Suomi College Finnish-American Collection is comprised of 100 reels of microfilm containing records from 151 separate organizations (68 of which are located in Michigan). These organizations are comprised of the following kinds of records:

  1. Church materials: 62 record groups (32 from Michigan)
  2. Labor societies: 9 record groups (0 from Michigan)
  3. Temperance materials: 61 record groups (26 from Michigan

Other organizations, including educational, relief, musical, athletic, national, historical societies, publishing companies, and some personal: 19 record groups (10 from Michigan)

Because the materials have been filmed in a random order, an index at the end of the container listing has been prepared to guide the researcher to specific kinds of records: church, temperance, etc.
