University of Michigan unit established in 1871 to accredit secondary schools. Consists primarily of accreditation inspection reports, 1871-1992, representing over 1,000 public and private high schools in Michigan. Reports include information on demographics, facilities, finances, curriculum, staffing, and reviewers comments. Some early reports were completed by John Dewey. Files are arranged by school alphabetically by city. The state assumed accreditation responsibility in 1992.

The records of the Bureau of School Service are comprised of 166 linear feet spanning the dates 1871 to 1992. The record group has been divided into three series: Administrative Files, Accreditation Inspection Reports, and Detroit High School Study Commission.

Accreditation Inspection Reports, 1871-1992

The Accreditation Inspection Reports (1871-1992), of which there are 163 linear feet, make up the bulk of the collection. These records include inspection reports, done by the Bureau and its predecessors, as well as reports submitted to the university's accreditation program by the individual schools. The files vary in size and content, but include information such as the following: student demographics, teacher education, curriculum, support facilities, class schedules, correspondence, population of city, enrollment, number of teachers, number of recitations, graduates attending higher education, employment practices, library facilities, laboratory facilities, school income, counseling standards, health programs, policies and objectives, guidance programs, administrator qualifications, and financial data. Some accreditation files of the North Central Association are also included.

The earliest accreditation inspection reports are located in two bound volumes at the beginning of the collection. These were part of the 1953 accession and span the dates 1892 to 1907, although reports of the North Central Association for 1905 are included with the unbound reports. Reports are in rough alphabetical order by city and primarily include information about the instructors, number of students, size of library, and other brief comments about the school. They are not filed alphabetically with the rest of the reports as they were not easily separable. The bound volumes also include early reports for schools outside of Michigan. Additionally, there is one folder of unbound accreditation reports done in 1905 for non-Michigan schools. See the folder listing for the names of the schools included in the 1905 reports. The remainder of the accreditation inspection reports are filed alphabetically by city and then alphabetically by school name. An attempt was made to list varying names that the school used during its history and to cross reference schools to other cities and/or schools as appropriate. There were a number of loose reports that were part of the 1953 accession that have been interfiled with the 1996 accession as a matter of convenience to the researcher. These were largely reports of the North Central Association.

Notes found within the collection indicate that university reports were not requested during the 1939/40 school year and that reports on school visits for the years 1879 to 1904 are available in the University of Michigan Registrar record group (box 11).

References to these school visits and reports can be found scattered throughout a variety of other University of Michigan record groups. There are also letters within the papers of university president James B. Angell pertaining to school visits. One should consult the volumes of calendars of Angell's letters for examples.

Shartel papers consist of correspondence and other papers concerning personal and family matters, professional affairs, the decision of the University to re-enter the Western Intercollegiate Conference; also correspondence from students serving in World War II; and photographs. The papers are organized into three series: correspondence, 1901-1963 (arranged chronologically); Papers, 185-1963; and photographs.

Correspondents include: Wilber M. Brucker, Homer Ferguson, Felix Frankfurter, Martha W. Griffiths, J. Joseph Herbert, Donald S. Leonard, George Meader, James O. Murfin, Marcus Plant, Roscoe Pound, Allan F. Smith, Edwin B. Stason, and Hessel N. Yntema.

The Photographs series consists of an album of portraits of family and friends; and album of European trip pictures.

Congregational church established in Wyoming Township, a suburb of Grand Rapids, in 1924. The church, subsequently renamed Burlingame Congregational United Church of Christ, disbanded in 2009. Church records document the history and activities of the church, and include registers of baptisms, marriages, and burials; also publications, scrapbooks, and records of women’s clubs.

The records of Burlingame Congregational United Church of Christ have been arranged into the following series: Church registers; Annual Reports; Church Newsletter; Church Bulletins; Scrapbooks; Miscellaneous; Women's Organizations; and Men's Organizations. Members of the church were careful in maintaining the history of Burlingame. The scrapbooks, in particular, contain a complete record of activities from 1924 to 1981. Included in these volumes are photographs, clippings, and programs from church activities, as well as historical notes about the church and biographical material on church pastors and various members. Also of value are the church registers which are both the minutes of the annual church meetings and the record of church functions and membership, notably baptisms, marriages, and burials.

The Burton family collection is made up of 8 letters, 1 indenture, and 5 other items pertaining to Clarence M. Burton of Detroit, Michigan, and two of his sons, Frank and Louis. The Burton brothers wrote about their travels in Europe during the interwar period, among other subjects.

The first item is an indenture concerning the sale of a lot of land in Detroit, Michigan (January 3, 1888). Correspondence includes letters by Louis Burton (July 2, 1901) and Frank Burton (July 11, 1903) about their travels in Europe and additional letters about the Burtons' personal lives and, occasionally, business affairs and political events. Frank Burton's letter to Charles Edouard Guilliume of the Bureau International des Poids & Mesures concerns Burton's pessimism about American attitudes toward the Treaty of Versailles (May 25, 1921), and Louis Burton's letter of March 30, 1929, relates to his anticipation of poor business returns for the year. Other items include a postcard with a printed advertisement for a genealogical history of the Burton family, 3 blank checks of Charles W. Burton, and a piece of stationery from the Burton Abstract & Title Company of Detroit, Michigan.

Senior and executive vice president of the National Bank of Detroit, later chairman of the board. The collection concerns business activities, personal interests, and travels. Included are business and personal correspondence, journals, travel materials, and other materials relating in part to his interest in amateur radio.

The Ellis B. Merry Personal Papers were assembled by Merry during his lifetime and include a number of documents from his years spent at the National Bank of Detroit. The collection, as arranged by his stepdaughter, Jean Dodenhoff, focuses primarily on his business activities, personal interests and travels. Materials found here include business and personal correspondence, journals, lists, some legal documents and publications, commendation certificates, travel itineraries, chronologies, reports, and memorabilia. There are a significant number of photographs documenting the boards of directors on which he served as well as the bank-related activities in which he participated. The collection has been arranged into the following series: Business Activities; Personal Activities; Personal Journals; Travel; and Photographs.

Series I. Business Activities 1933-1980s. This series is primarily concerned with Merry's business activities after he joined the National Bank of Detroit in 1944. This series contains documents, reports, publications and memorabilia pertaining to the bank as well as similar materials concerning his other business activities including his directorships for companies such as McLouth Steel from 1956 to 1971, the Ambassador Bridge Corporation and the Grand Trunk Western Railroad from 1966 to 1987(?).

The National Bank of Detroit subseries covers business activities related to Merry's various positions with National Bank as well as his extra-curricular participation in annual staff skits and in the Officers Revolver Club of the National Bank of Detroit. Correspondence, memos, programs and reports are found here. Of special interest are Merry's 1955 report on the deposit structure of Detroit banks and his 1972 Retirement Tribute from the National Bank Board.

The Fletcher family collection consists primarily the records of the family's business activities. The business correspondence date from 1856 to 1936 and relates to the operation of family firms, notably A. F. Fletcher & Co., Fletcher Pack & Co., and George N. Fletcher & Sons. The business records series is more specifically arranged by company name and includes the Alpena Power Company/Alpena Electric Light Co., George N. Fletcher & Sons, and the Alpena Water Company among others. Other series in the collection relate to both personal and corporate litigation. The Frank W. Fletcher Personal papers concerns his tenure as a regent of the University of Michigan and his continuing interest in university affairs.

The collection originally was in small packets of related materials which accounts for overlapping chronological sequences. It is organized by format, location, and date into Correspondence, some with Track Blueprints, Movements of Trains, Track Schedules, and various Financial Account Books, 1846-1960.

The Greg Calvert Papers (1920-2000) consist of personal journals, unpublished writings, and correspondence by the former Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) National Secretary. Other materials include photographs, family documents, a manuscript copy of Calvert's book Democracy from the Heart. The unpublished writings consist of poems, manuscripts, and essays.

The Greg Calvert Papers consist of photographs, family documents, personal journals, correspondence, drawings, a manuscript copy of Calvert's book Democracy from the Heart, and unpublished material such as manuscripts, essays, and poetry. The materials are arranged in seven series: Calvert Family Papers, Unpublished Manuscripts, Personal Journals, Correspondence, Unpublished Essays, Unpublished Poems, and Democracy from the Heart Manuscript.

The personal journals include Calvert's writings at various points in time and locales in his life. The manuscripts, essays, and poems consist of typewritten, xeroxed, and handwritten copies. Correspondence includes letters, postcards, and some photographs to and from various friends throughout Calvert's life.

The essays included in the "Various essays and writings" folder are marked as the following on the included inventory: "Neocapitalism and the New Left," "Is Freedom Academic?," "The Ruling Class and the Elections," "The Other Side," "The End of the Run," Gay Freedom Week speech, "The Ordering of Days," "The Violence We Do to Ourselves," "Gimme Shelter," "United States Violence in the World of the 1980s," "Communitarian Democracy," A Model Democratic Community," "The Political Animal and Environmental Ethics," "The Challenge of Democratic Idealism," untitled essays on Carl Davidson, Paul Goodman, and human growth.

The cassette tapes consist of recorded notes and drafts for "The Hotel of the Two Worlds," interviews for the "After the War" oral history and manuscript, an interview with Greg's father, Clyde Calvert, and other various topics.
