Collection of circus-related materials encompassing many formts, circuses, and circus-related organizations.

This collection of circus-related materials encompasses a wide span of years, 1905, 2011, and undated, many formats, and many circuses, both foreign and domestic, and circus-related organizations in 13.5 cubic ft. (in 16 boxes and 12 Oversized folders). Included are correspondence, photographs, postcards, posters, programs, newspaper clippings, advertisements, scrapbooks, coloring books, food containers, stickers, badges, arrows, articles, maps, tickets, and Christmas tree ornaments, among others. Some of these materials are reproductions. There are some carnival-related materials mixed into the collection. Although most of the materials are written or published in English, some items are written or published in other languages, notably Spanish which relates to his work with the Little Sisters of Jesus. A folder of biographical material and several of related correspondence with the Little Sisters of Jesus documents Father Jim’s life and activities. Some parts of the collection were donated to Father Jim by other circus fans, among them Kent Ghirard.

One of the most interesting aspects of this collection is the documentation of two organizations that provide and discuss pastoral care to those in circuses and other traveling shows: The Little Sisters of Jesus and the International Congress for the Pastoral Care of the Circus and Traveling Show People.

The Circus Fans Association, various Shrine circuses, Circus City, Circus World Museum, and the Circus Hall of Fame are documented, as well as many circuses, both foreign and domestic. Please note: the collection has a strong mildew smell. Researchers and staff using the collection with allergies or asthma may wish to take precautions.

Processing Notes: A wide variety of publications, 94 titles, donated by Father Jim with his collection, have been separately cataloged as either books or serials, depending on their format.

Acidic materials have been copied and the originals withdrawn from the collection, as were duplicates. The total amount withdrawn from the collection during processing was 5 cubic feet.

The collection includes material documenting the site’s restoration process from DRLPs' inception until 2004, the DeTour Reef Cruise (2003-2005), the “Under the Stars” annual benefit dinner (2004-2005), DRLPS' work with Asbestos Management, 1999-2000, to clear the site before restoration, the official transfer of the site’s lease from the U.S Coast Guard to the DRLPS, financial reports and meeting minutes.

Materials covered by the DRLPS collection include the DeTour Reef Cruise (2003-2005), the “Under the Stars” annual benefit dinner (2004-2005), the group’s work with Asbestos Management, 1999-2000, to clear the site before restoration, the official transfer of the site’s lease from the U.S Coast Guard to the DRLPS, along with the group’s financial reports and meeting minutes.

The main focus of the collection is its material documenting the site’s restoration process from the group’s inception until 2004. Vital to the project was the securing of grant money, the collection including grant material from the Michigan Lighthouse Alliance for Preservation (MLAP), Michigan Coastal Management Program (MCMP), Clean Michigan Initiative (CMI), and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, as well as specific grants to restore the site’s fog horn, windows, and to rent a deck crane for heavy lifting.

Box 1 of the collections includes organizational materials such as bylaws and articles of incorporation.

Other materials found in the boxes include photographs, pamphlets, fliers, magazines, and banded manuals.

Also included in the collection is a set of 140 oversized drawings dating, 1975-1982, detailing the light’s features. These drawings are located in oversized folders #1 and #2. Oversized folder #3 includes oversized materials, such as plans and charts, which were pulled from the binders.

Drawings 89-98 in Oversized Folder #1 included in set as packet of legal-sized documents.

All pre-1998 materials are photocopies from various sources made in 1998.

Processing Notes: .5 cubic feet of peripheral material and approximately 45 duplicate drawings were returned to the donor per his request. Items that were fragile or acidic were copied and their originals withdrawn from the collection.

Organization established to improve the health and living conditions of migrant farmworkers in six states of the Upper Midwest. Administrative records; program files detailing operation of Camp Health Aide program and publication of Migrant Health Service Directory; topical files, and videotapes publicizing camp health aide program.

The Migrant Health Promotion records document the efforts of one organization to provide health care assistance to the migrant workers of the Midwest. Beyond the history of the organization itself, the records detail something of the life and condition of workers in the migrant camps during the 1980s and 1990s with special emphasis on their health care needs.

The records of the Migrant Health Promotion have been arranged into eight series: Administrative Records; Outreach; Camp Aide Program (CHAP); Other Programs and Related Materials; Topical Files; Photographs; Videotapes; and Sound Recordings.

The Michigan Garden Clubs was formed in 1931 as an organization of separate Michigan gardening groups. The record group includes administrative and historical files, activities files, awards, correspondence, yearbooks, and photographs.

The records of the Michigan Garden Clubs are a synthesis of the collections kept by individual members of the organization over time. The structure of the finding aid reflects this in that several topics such as Meeting Minutes, Correspondence, and Newsletters, appear in multiple series of the collection. The record group is divided into eight series: Administration; Activities; Landscape Design Critics Council; Gardening Consultants Council; Ruth Knott files; Awards, Loda Lake Nature Preserve, Yearbooks, and 2017 accessions.

The records of the Division of Research Development and Administration (1919-1996) encompass the DRDA and all of its predecessor organizations, including the Department of Engineering Research, the Engineering Research Institute, the University of Michigan Research Institute, and the Office of Research Administration. Record types include correspondence, topical subject files, research grant files, meeting minutes, financial records, and photographs.

The records of the Division of Research Development and Administration (1919-1996) encompass both the DRDA and all of its predecessor organizations. The papers have been divided into seven major series: Governing and Oversight Bodies (1919-1964), Staff and Committee Records (ca. 1922-1979), Administrative Files (1922-1972), Correspondence Files (1943-1972), Willow Run Laboratories (1946-1966), Directors' Files, and several boxes of Research Grant Files on microfilm. There are also four smaller series: the Engineering College Research Council (1959-1961), Review of the DRDA - Report to Harold Shapiro, 1980, Engineering Research Institute - miscellaneous research reports, Photographs, and Programmed Research Information System at Michigan (PRISM) Reports.

Professor of geography at the University of Michigan. Series include correspondence, subject files, professional societies, geography courses, reprints, manuscripts, notes as a student, and photographs; files relate to his professional interests and to the subject of geography.

The George Kish papers are divided into eight series: Correspondence, Subject Folders, Professional Societies, Geography Courses, Reprints, Manuscripts, Notes as a Student, and Photographs. These eight sections correspond, more or less, to the order that Kish maintained for his own files. The collection documents the academic career of Kish, from his Paris days as a student and his years at the U-M as a professor to his retirement and beyond. The collection's focus is not strictly on the university, as it also reflects Kish's prolific writings and his work in professional societies.

Football coach, 1938-1948, and Athletic Director at the University of Michigan, 1941-1968. Papers include correspondence and other papers concerning his career at the University of Chicago, the University of Minnesota, Princeton University, and the University of Michigan; materials concerning his work and association with the National Collegiate Athletic Association rules committee, 1942-1977, the Intercollegiate (Big Ten) Conference, and the University's Board in Control of Intercollegiate Activities; also include materials relating to University of Chicago football coach, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Ralph Young, athletic director at Michigan State University, and the founding and first years of the American Football League; and photographs.

The Crisler papers document Fritz Crisler's career in athletics, 1923-1978, as a student athlete at the University of Chicago, football coach at Minnesota, Princeton and Michigan, as Athletic Director at Michigan and as a member of the NCAA football rules committee, 1942-1977. The collection is composed of several series: General and Topical Correspondence; Speeches and Articles; Football Material; NCAA Football Rules Committee; Intercollegiate Conference [Big Ten]; Clippings and Scrapbooks; Amos Alonzo Stagg; Photographs and films.

Records of the Edwin S. George Reserve, Livingston County, Michigan, operated by the University of Michigan as a natural area for scientific study. Collection includes administrative records, history, publications, research, photographs, maps, and other records relating to Reserve activities.

The Edwin S. George Reserve records document the history, administration, and research activities of the Reserve, which is owned and operated by the University of Michigan. The collection includes 15 linear feet of boxed material, as well as oversized photographs and maps and dates from 1929 to 2010. However, many of the dates listed in the collection, particularly dates for the research records, reflect the dates of the information in the record rather than the date the actual record was created, to better represent the research period. The records are arranged in seven series: Administrative Records, Publications and Papers, Research, Deer Herd, Photographs, Maps, and the Archived Website.

The records include GLLKa's Board of Directors meeting minutes, lists of members, reports, correspondence, subject Files, oral history interviews, materials related to efforts to get Mackinaw declared a National Lighthouse Museum site, materials related to the Great Lakes Lighthouse Museum, and oversized materials.

The collection includes GLLKA’s Board of Directors’ Meeting Minutes, Lists of members, Annual and other Financial Reports; Correspondence, including general correspondence, correspondence re: the St. Helena Light Station, Books-In-Print, and various historical institutions; Subject Files, document the project grant for the oral histories, interview forms, information about persons who were interviewed, and the various publications and other endeavors of GLLKA. Actual interview cassette tapes are in two small boxes.

The 2007 addition (Boxes 10-15) is predominantly minutes, reference materials, plans, and subject Files for the National Lighthouse Museum proposal. Oversized materials include various Michigan House of Representatives Concurrent Resolutions, 1995, drawings of Great Lakes Lighthouses and their locations that GLLKA has created and distributed, and the Ninth Law of Congress, an Act to Establish and for the Support of Lighthouses, Beacons, Buoys, and Public Piers, approved in 1789 (20th c. copy and transcription). Scrapbooks, 1943, 1999 (3 cubic ft.), a video, pin, and bumper sticker complete the collection.

The 2008 addition (Boxes 17-21 and Oversized folders #5-6) consists mainly of GLLKA general materials, notebooks; Great Lakes Lighthouse Museum, Board of Directors and Committees Meeting Minutes, 1997-1998 (Scattered), Newspaper Clippings (copies), and other reference materials, and St. Helena Lighthouse Restoration Project Materials and Photographs. Box#21 (slide box) consists of colored slides, 1997-1998, arranged alphabetically by topic.
