This collection contains printed materials and photographs collected by Mary Hunt in preparation for writing the Hunts' Guides series of Michigan travel books. The collection is divided into two series:Printed Materials and Photographs.

Business records of J.C. Satterthwaite, primarily of his flour and lumber mill, but also documenting his activities as railroad freight agent and his other business interests in Tecumseh, Michigan.

The business records in this collection chronicle the commercial and financial transactions of J.C. Satterthwaite and family in the period of 1844-1874 (with the bulk falling in the 1850s and 1860s). Though there are some records prior to the period when Satterthwaite had control of the "Raisin Mills," the great majority of records document the various commercial activities of the Satterthwaite family. Concerned with the routine of daily business life in Raisin and Tecumseh, Michigan, the daily transactions offer a microcosm of small town commerce in nineteenth-century Michigan.

The collection has been arranged by the different kinds of enterprises in which the Satterthwaites were involved: the grain and flour mills, a warehouse (or possibly warehouses), and a retail store. For each of these, Satterthwaite maintained day books, ledgers, and journals. The day books document the daily register/receipts of the grain mill, retail establishment, and warehouse. These volumes encompass the years 1844-1865, with an emphasis on the activity at the grain mill.

The ledgers contain the running documentation of individual customer accounts with an emphasis on accounts established at the warehouse. In addition to ledgers for the grain mill and warehouse, the collection contains two which list railroad freight accounts. These last, seemingly unrelated to any of the other businesses, are presumably evidence of J.C. Satterthwaite's additional career as a railroad freight agent.

The cash books record the cash flow of the various establishments, with, as in the day books, an emphasis on the grain mill transactions. Somewhat unrelated to the rest of the collection is a cash book related to the selling of plaster. Its connection with the other Satterthwaite business records is unclear.

The day books, in particular, offer insight into the bulk quantities of staples purchased by individuals at that time, while that of the retail store reflects other, smaller necessities purchased regularly by the townspeople of Raisin and Tecumseh. The collection concludes with a miscellaneous series consisting of the personal financial documents of J.C. Satterthwaite, coupled with two folders of loan documents and receipts, which together suggest an active borrowing and loaning of funds outside of the confines of the Bank of Tecumseh.

Several volumes in the collection have illegible pages due to their later use as scrapbooks. These scrapbook pages contain contemporaneous newspaper clippings consisting of poetry, caricatures, and inspirational stories.

Biographical, Educational, and InterInstitutional Affiliation papers of Edna Heilbronn, professor at Central Michigan University.

The collection is organized into the following series: Biographical, Educational Materials, and InterInstitutional Affiliation Project at CMU, and alphabetically within each series.

The collection includes some Biographical Information, such as Professor Heilbronn's Obituary (copy), 1968, and Photographs (and copies), 1952, 1965, undated. One photograph shows her speaking at the dedication of CMU's Woldt and Emmons Halls, May 9, 1965. Other photographs document her teaching career and involvement with the Project.

Her career and professional activities are documented by Educational Materials, including her syllabi and related materials for various education related and student teaching courses she taught, ca. 1944, 1955, undated; materials for the Teacher Education Project, 1959-1962, undated; information about the Association for Student Teaching, circa 1957; a few General Education Committee, Meeting Minutes, 1962-1963; and College of Education, Miscellaneous, 1944, 1963, undated. Also included is a paper she wrote entitled "Professional Year," a draft of the paper, and related correspondence, 1951.

Correspondence, Meeting Minutes, Reports, Published Materials, some of the above mentioned Photographs, 1957-1966, document her work with the InterInstitutional Affiliation Project at CMU, the organization in general, and the national meetings that Prof. Heilbronn attended as the coordinator for Project at CMU.

Collection, 1881-1989, undated, includes textual materials, photographs, military publications and objects documenting Tip’s life in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, his World War I service in France, his family, and Central Michigan University.

Collection, 1881-1989, undated, includes textual materials, photographs, military publications and objects documenting Tip’s life in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, his World War I service in France, his family, and Central Michigan University. The first donation of materials includes two handwritten World War I letters, one a breakup letter to Tip from “Dutch”, 1918 (with matching enveloped attached to a scrapbook page; censor approved letter from Tip to his father, November 12, 1918 about the time directly before and after the Armistice, celebrating the Armistice; unidentified African Americans in an unspecified labor battalion whom he refers to several times in derogatory, racist terms, and his thoughts of friends and the future; two acidic, worn pages (Front and back) of an oversized scrapbook, with a published letter from Tip to his father, October 23, 1918, describing life in France, the artillery, and Boche lines; a French regulation artillery form, filled in in English, undated; published World War I song lyrics, October 11, 1919; and a page of miscellaneous including ration cards, a Paris postcard, and a newspaper article about the Armistice, undated (preservation copies of the scrapbook pages were added in color and black and white by the Archivist); four newspaper clippings include: an acidic image of Carnahan in his WWI uniform for his 90th birthday, 1984 (and preservation copies); and three long descriptive interviews with Carnahan by Burnie Bonnel, published in the Mount Pleasant (Mich.) Morning Sun, about his life at CMU, in Mount Pleasant, during and after WWI, and his opinions on various topics, January 23-24, 1986 and July 1, 1989. His obituary (1990, copy) is in the Hotel Chieftan scrapbook,1947-1971, which is also housed at the Clarke.

The 2020 addition includes photographs of Tip and his family; and Tip’s family history written and pasted onto a piece of cardboard. His service materials include: two service patches; his veteran’s bonuses and insurance materials; official war correspondence including his embarkation orders, his official papers of promotion, several associated manuals, discharge papers; personal notes and other materials that he used while discharging his duty. Published works include: a book on cavalry drill regulations for the US Army, 1916; a booklet on the by-laws of Union Prisoners of War Association, 1881; a French phrase book for American soldiers, 1918; and a book on the 329th Barrage which was the unit that Tip served with in France, 1919. One oversized folder includes a selection of mostly American piano sheet music, 1911-1945, and undated, which were retained in the collection due to the images on their covers and/or inscriptions from members of the Carnahan family. The collection is organized by format, size, and alphabetically. Overall, the collection is in good condition although two folders are fragile and one piece of cardboard with family history pasted and written on it is acidic.

The collection includes two diaries, for 1864 and 1865. In the 1864 diary, Dean tells of directing and supervising men in erecting and operating sawmills and building storehouses, hospitals, bridges, etc. around Lookout Mountain and Chattanooga. He also writes of the move from there to the siege of Atlanta and the occupation of Atlanta; of deserters, prisoners, destruction of railroads, regimental inspections, and camp life in general; and of the return march to Chattanooga in six and one-half days. The 1865 diary (Jan.-June), kept while he was in Chattanooga, tells about the weather, building barracks, duties, social activities, the surrender of Lee, death of Lincoln, and mustering out. Also includes miscellaneous citations, commissions, legal documents relating to his military service and his work as regent, and a statement (notarized by Dean) of Victor C. Vaughan pertaining to the Douglas-Rose dispute, 1878.

The following collection contains certificates, invitations, news releases, organization chart, passes, permits, tickets, pendants, coins, and Brothers of the Brush and Queen Contest rules of the Mount Pleasant Area and Chippewa Indian Centennial Association, Inc.

The collection, 2019, 5 cubic feet (in 10 boxes), was collected by Quita V. Shier to research her subsequent book on the topic, and includes research copies of military service records of the men in Company K from the National Archives and information from online censuses and newspapers documenting the First Michigan Sharpshooter Regiment, Company K.

Shier to research her subsequent book on the topic, and includes research copies of military service records of the men in Company K from the National Archives and information from online censuses and newspapers documenting the First Michigan Sharpshooter Regiment, Company K. The military service records document enlistment, pay, invalid status, death or discharge, and/or pension records in military forms and correspondence. Only a few images are included of tombstones or portraits of soldiers in obituaries. A few tax or land records are also included. The collection documents the lives and significance of the Company K soldiers during the Civil War era. This collection is organized alphabetically by the name of the soldier’s surnames. The originals are housed in the National Archives.

This collection consists of a wide range of materials including biographical information, manuscripts, research and notes, and correspondence of Professor Maybee's (including Central Michigan University (CMU) Department of Social Sciences, Michigan Historical Society, personal, and student academics). Two boxes of the collection consist of papers and correspondence from Professor C.S. Larzelere, also of CMU.

This collection consists of a wide range of materials including biographical information, manuscripts, research and notes, and correspondence (including Central Michigan University (CMU) Department of Social Sciences, Michigan Historical Society, personal, and student academics). The collection is widely related to the history of Michigan and the history of Central Michigan University. Correspondence with President Dwight D. Eisenhower and correspondence between H.L. Menckin and Mr. Leighly can be found in box 2 of the collection. Telegrams from the following people can be found in box 8: Richard Nixon, Congressman Elford A. Cederberg, Governor G. Mennen Williams, and Arthur S. Flemming (Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare). Box 4 of the collection holds a Correspondence from Henry Miller, and Box 6 has newspaper clippings related to Senator Robert Griffin, and alumni of CMU.

Materials processed by Anjali Grose largely include correspondence related to: the Central Michigan University (CMU) Department of Social Sciences; the Michigan Historical Society Trustees and Committees; the Michigan Historical Society about state conferences; student academic; and personal information. Other materials processed by A. Grose include a collection of glass slides used for educational purposes (most of these slides were withdrawn); research and a rough draft of a paper on Father Nouvel; newspaper clippings (copies) on R.H. Maybee, H.C. Maybee, and B. Maybee; programs for the memorial services of R.H. Maybee and H.C. Maybee; photographs and related correspondence; miscellaneous research, notes, and sources; and the scrapbook materials found in Box 9.

Materials processed by Bronwyn Benson include Maybee’s Master’s Thesis, the manuscripts for his publications and speeches, the transcripts of sources he used for his research, and a newspaper article relating to a mystery rock Maybee was researching; correspondence from Dwight Eisenhower and H. L. Mencken; documents relating to CMU including the dictation discs and reel-to-reel tapes, and the architectural plans for a possible new building; and the documents pertaining to Claude S. Larzelere and his wife including speeches, teaching notes, and diplomas.

Materials processed by Tressa Graves include biographical information pertaining to Maybee’s research, information on Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School, United States Navy V12 program at CMU during World War II and various data related to the surrounding area and CMU. Other materials included the telegrams from Richard Nixon, Congressman Elford A. Cederberg, Governor G. Mennen Williams, and Arthur S. Flemming, updated information on the Prof. Charles Bellows’ desk (up until the new Maybee information it was presumed to be Charles Grawn’s), Claude S. Larzelere’s certificates and diplomas, and a letter from Henry Miller. Besides the significant materials, most of the materials that were processed were withdrawn.

What did others process? Other materials found include two 16mm films, seven glass slides used for educational purposes, photographs, four Reel-to-Reel tapes, pamphlets and catalogues from a scrapbook on CMU. Notecards are organized by size into 5 boxes (Boxes 13-17) pertaining to research by R.H. Maybee and CMU faculty members, and oversize materials including Federal Census data for Isabella County, Michigan, CMU account books, and others.

Oversized folders 1-3 include materials collected by Maybee, a proposal by architects, undated; notes on CMU accounts, 1894-1923; and notes on Rolland Township, Isabella County, Michigan Federal Census data, 1860.

In addition to this collection, papers of Claude S. Larzelere and publications by both Maybee and Larzelere are separately cataloged and housed in the Clarke Historical Library. Maybee also wrote an article on David Ward which was published in Michigan History (32, 1, March 1948). Copies of Maybee's notes on CMU history may also be found in the Central Michigan University 75th Anniversary collection in the Clarke.

Processing Note: A total of 24 cubic feet was withdrawn from this collection including duplicates, published items, reading materials, generic correspondence, generic applications, resumes, interview materials, and student papers.

Photographs include portraits of Alfred Holmes White, alone and with his wife, Rebecca D. White; informal photographs of the Whites' fiftieth wedding anniversary celebration; and photograph of Alfred White with chemistry students at University of Michigan.

The collection includes: letters, catalogs, photographs, personal and business correspondence, clippings (copies), specifications, time books, scrapbooks, genealogical materials, and other materials.

The collection was process by different groups of student processors over years. Series 1 Papers, 1833, 1976, undated, 3.5 cubic ft. (in 7 boxes, 2 Ov. v.)

Series 1 contains account books, biographical information, catalogues, correspondence, financial and insurance documents, receipts, photographs, the Wedgeway Service Letter and yearly planners. Material also covers the city of Saginaw and various institutions within the city. Newspaper clippings include articles related to Saginaw, the Morley Brothers, the fire of 1949, and advertising. Various recipes within the collection offer remedies for physical ailments. Memorabilia includes materials from the National Rifle Association and World War II. The Lest We Forget 1952 includes an entry on October 17, 1952 about Representative Richard Nixon running for office.
