The Irene Tejada Papers include materials from the professional career of Irene Tejada, as well as materials documenting the history of University School. Organized into three series, Teaching/Professional Materials, Visual Materials, and University School Related Materials, the papers span the years 1928-1998 with the bulk of the materials from 1950 to 1970. The strength of the collection lies in the many depictions of life and activities at the University School through both visual and non-visual materials.

The collection consists of various size and types of photographic materials of people, logging and lumbering, the Ross Bros.’ store and mill, school children, dams, water scenes, and buildings of Beaverton, Michigan. Tintypes, postcards, Kodak prints, and cabinet card style photographs are included in the collection. The collection is in very good condition. Some of the people and buildings are identified. Mrs. Velma Ross Damoth collected the materials that comprise this collection.

A number of loose scraps of paper with identification information have become detached from the photographs and were found in the bottom of box during processing. These have been copied and put in the front of the first folder of Box 1. Many of the photographs in the collection were reproduced in the book Beaverton: a century in the making (2003), copies of which are available both in the Park and the Clarke.

Kalamazoo, Michigan, educator, Democratic state senator. Correspondence, legal papers, genealogical data, diaries and account books; and compositions concerning Kalamazoo College, Middlebury College, Zebulon Pike, James W. Ransom, temperance, the Presbyterian church of Kalamazoo, and Marshall Academy.

The collection includes family letters of the Balch and Dungan families, with one letter (1813) reporting on the death and burial of General Zebulon Pike. There are some legal and business papers, some private and some connected with Kalamazoo College. The diaries are incomplete with brief entries. The volumes were also used for legal notes and business accounts. Other papers include manuscripts (1834-35) during Balch's stay at Middlebury College; addresses on temperance, education, and other subjects; and miscellaneous post office and county records. There are some papers of Balch's son while a student at The University of Michigan (1865-66).

His papers include biographical material on the Howes and Holmes families and on Ithaca Civil War veteran Myron R. Holmes, and Ithaca and Gratiot County, Michigan, history.

The collection provides genealogical information on the Holmes family, especially Civil War veterans, and general information, mostly through photographs of the Gratiot County Herald newspaper, documenting families and life in Gratiot County in the early 1900s.
