His papers consist mainly of his research and genealogical files on Native Americans, particularly those in Michigan, notably 350 files (copies) from the National Archives, and also include his client files, diaries, and other materials. Box 26 is closaed until 2030 re: donor agreement.

The collection is composed of his accumulated reference files, client files, and writing, as some personal materials.

The reference files include copies of Probate Court files, commonly referred to as “350 files” from the National Archives, which are used extensively to prove tribal genealogy, lineage, and membership. The 350 files are in the original order that they were given to Keller by researcher Guy Fringer in 1994. A listing, by Fringer, precedes the files in the box. Additional reference files, largely photocopies, follow the 350 files in alphabetical order and concern the Keweenaw Bay and L’Anse Native American communities. Box 8 of the collection consists of user copies of all the 350 files. These files total 8 boxes of various sizes (4.5 cubic ft.).

A tape recording of oral interviews with Norman Landosky and Ron Douglas on August 1995, was used to create the report, A Micro model of leadership among the Ojibwa of south east Michigan and their descendants, 58 p. [89 p.].

Keller’s Native [American Research] Files, as he referred to them, consist of 4 boxes (2 cubic ft.) of copies of information which are organized by state and by topic. They largely relate to Michigan tribes, their issues and heritage, and Native American casino issues in general, although a variety of Native American topics both historic and current are covered. Most of these materials were compiled between 2000 and 2007 from newspapers, magazines, and Internet articles. Two publications (copies) of note by Charles Cleland-Report of the 19th Century History of the Saginaw, Black River, and Swan Creek Chippewa, 1992, and Theodore Karamanski-Isabella Indian reservation: A History of Allotment and Saginaw Chippewa, 1870-1934, 2007, the latter created for the Michigan Attorney General, are found in Box 21. There are also some research materials related to Caro local and church history. There are also some research materials related to Caro local and church history.

Also related to both his research and Native Files are a number of large binders of materials including Michigan tribe allotments, rolls, and research, New York tribes, partial copies of topical books, and genealogical reference materials, 3 boxes (3 cubic ft.).

His client files, 3 boxes (1.5 cubic ft.) include notes, emails, correspondence for genealogy research he conducted for his clients, mostly Native American genealogy for individuals to attain tribal membership. Correspondence in Box 26 is closed until 2030.

Keller’s diaries, 1969-2007, and his biographical materials folder, 5.5 boxes (approximately 2.5 cubic ft.) provide background on his life and interests. He later annotated the diaries covering his years at Albion college, 1969-1972, and that is found in a binder in Box 26.

Processing Notes: Various and numerous financial records, miscellaneous notes, duplicates, blanks, and out of scope published materials were removed from the collection (3 cubic ft.). Additionally, with the original Acc#72362, approximately 15 cubic ft. of publications, mainly out of scope genealogical newsletters were originally donated to the Clarke. Following his wishes, some publications were cataloged separately at the Clarke, some were transferred to specific genealogical research institutions, and the rest were disposed of.

The collection includes: letters, catalogs, photographs, personal and business correspondence, clippings (copies), specifications, time books, scrapbooks, children's homework and handmade cards to Santa, genealogical materials, and other materials.

The collection was process by different groups of student processors over years. Series 1 Papers, 1833, 1976, undated, 3.5 cubic ft. (in 7 boxes, 2 Ov. v.); Series 2 Papers, 1833, 2009, undated, 6.5 cubic ft. (in 13 boxes, 3 Ov. v.).

Series 2 includes materials mostly in English, but some are in German or Russian, which is noted in the Box and Folder Listing.

In Series 2 notable correspondence includes Rep. J.W. Fordney, Governor Chase S. Osborn, President Herbert Hoover and letters and Christmas cards to and from World War II servicemen. Material also covers Reuben Hitchcock Morley’s murder in China, the city of Saginaw, various institutions within the city and other companies owned by Morley relatives in the United States. Newspaper clippings (copies) include articles related to Saginaw, the Morley Brothers, the fire of 1934 and the Morley Family.

There are photographs in Series 2 Box 4 of the Morley Brothers at DuMont Television, an early manufacturer of televisions.

Personal Correspondence of various family members is found in Series 2 Boxes 5-10. Of note here are charming, homemade notes to Santa created by children Abigail, Charles, Mary and Paul Morley, Jr., undated. The notes are handwritten or printed, signed, on red cardboard and decorated with drawings and stickers.

Series 2 Box 6 includes correspondence between Paul Morley and the British Embassy, 1916.

Series 2 Box 8 includes correspondence from between P.F.H. Morley and the editor of the Horseless Age, the “first Motor Vehicle Journal in the English language.” Correspondence notes that Morley had troubles with his gasoline engine and inquired about a fuel source called “energine”. In Box 8 there is also correspondence between Paul Morley recommending possible donors to support The National Home Finding Society for Colored Children (copies, originals), 1916. Correspondence in Box 8 about the New York Times is about the purchase of a subscription for Fred Ecton and complaints about a late paper.

Series 2 Box 11 includes materials of the Menominee Hardware Company which was either owned or co-owned by the Morleys. Box 11 also includes correspondence between the Morley Brothers and the U.S. War Department, 1919, noting how they are trying to hire veterans, and War Department requests for Morley to complete a questionnaire re: company war efforts. It appears that they supplied war products.

Series 2 Box 12 includes Morley Brothers Patents, 1886-1956. Several of these patents were purchased by the Morleys, while the rest of the folders concerns trademarks.

Series 2 includes one Oversized Folder with a Goodridge Bros. photograph of a house with four children, a man and a horse. The photographers, notable African-Americans, are identified on the back of the image.

Series 2 Processing Note: During processing approximately 5 cubic feet of materials, mostly duplicates or materials which were copied and the copies retained, were withdrawn from the collection. In addition, approximately 2 cubic feet of general Saginaw history materials, general Michigan photographs and postcards were added to the Michigan vertical files, Michigan photographs or Michigan postcards collections in the Clarke. Published materials of a substantial nature in both series were separately cataloged.

The Bentley Historical Library (BHL) houses the Michigan Historical collections, which documents the history of Michigan; and the University Archives and Records Program, which maintains the historical records of the University of Michigan. Founded in 1935 as the Michigan Historical Collections, directors of the library include Lewis G. Vander Velde, F. Clever Bald, Robert M. Warner and Francis X. Blouin, Jr. The publications include annual reports, bulletins, bibliographies, newsletters, and books produced by the BHL using its holdings

The PUBLICATIONS (3.7 linear feet) are divided into two series: Unit Publications and Sub-Unit Publications.

The Unit Publications series contains complete runs of the Bentley Historical Library publications. These include annual reports, 1935-2012 (except for 1989-1990 and 1997-2004, when no annual reports were published). The Unit Publications series also includes brochures, calendars, exhibit programs and manuals such as the University Archives and Records Program Records Policy and Procedures Manual. There is a complete run of topical resource bibliographies including the Bibliographic Series (No. 1-11) dating from 1973 to 1988 and the Guide Series written starting in 1996. In 2001 a guide to holdings relating to Detroit was published. The Unit Publications series includes a comprehensive collection of bibliographies such as the Guide to Manuscripts in the Bentley Historical Library published in 1976 and a bibliography of works derived using the holdings in the Bentley Historical Library, 1935-2010, issued as the Bentley celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2010. The Bulletin Series is a series of booklets largely written on Michigan or University of Michigan topics using Bentley Library collections and record groups as source material. This series began in 1947 and continues to the present.

The Unit Publications series contains monographs published by or in conjunction with the Bentley Historical Library. This eclectic subseries includes a biography of Ann Allen written by Russell Bidlack, a history of the Detroit observatory by Patricia Whitesell, and an updated edition of Howard Peckham's history of the University of Michigan. There have been two newsletters published by the unit, the Michigan Historical Collection Gazette published from 1967 to 1988 and the Bentley Historical Library which began publication in 1989 and continues to the present.

The Sub-Unit Publications series contains undated brochures from the Friends of the Bentley Historical Library.

The collection includes the following series, biographical information, photographs, correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, speeches, and subject files documenting Eugene C. Warriner's tenure as Central Michigan University's president, 1970, 1989.

The collection is organized by the following series: Biographical Materials, Correspondence, Meeting Minutes, Photographs, Reports, Speeches, and Subject Files. Dr. Warriner’s personal papers, 1885, 2002, including Biographical Information, such as his Obituary, 1945, and Memorial Service Materials, 1946; a Scrapbook, undated, ca. 1890; Photographs, undated; his Diaries and Date Books, 1885, 1903, 1905-1906, 1929-1937; his License to Preach, 1913; and related newspaper articles (copies). Other series in the collection include Correspondence, which includes personal correspondence, such as about the death of his son Paul Warriner, 1917, and professional correspondence, 1902-1939, undated; Meeting Minutes of various CMU organizations and committees, 1932-1940; Reports of CMU and educational organizations, 1919,1939; Speeches Dr. Warriner gave, 1906, 1942, undated; Subject Files, 1907-1948 and two student papers about him, 1952, and undated; and his Writings and Speeches, 1900-1935, undated. Lastly, there is a box of 3 x 5 inch index cards, indexing his correspondence, 1992-1939, undated.

The collection provides good documentation on Warriner, his interests, ideas, and education and CMU related issues of interest during his tenure as CMU’s president.

Items of note specifically related to Warriner’s interest, views and work related to peace and related issues include: (all in Box 2 folders): in Correspondence: Peace, 1911-1916, 1919: numerous correspondence related to peace, most notably the American School Peace League Letterhead letter about the Celebration Peace Day, April 12, 1915; in Speeches, Miscellaneous-Peace Papers, 1912-1913: the rare newspaper-style undated facsimile about Kellogg-Briand Pact “Si Vis Pacem, Para Pacem;” and in Subject file: American Association of Teacher College, Standards, 1926-1927: his handwritten draft, Essay on Socrates.

Director of the University of Michigan Museum of Art, professor of art and art history. Subject files relating to his University of Michigan activities and to his involvement with various art museums and art associations; and photographs.

Sawyer's papers document the range of his professional activities as well as his post-retirement projects. The collection spans the years of 1930, when Sawyer was curator at Phillips Academy, to 1997, almost twenty-five years after his retirement from the University of Michigan. Sawyer's correspondence, speeches, and research compose much of the collection; there are also photographs, course descriptions, and committee meeting minutes.

The collection is arranged into the following series: University of Michigan, Organizational Affiliations, Personal, Germanic Architecture, and Photographs.

Presbyterian clergyman, longtime pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1934-1951; correspondence, copies of essays and book reviews written for religious periodicals, sermons and addresses, mimeographed study notes of talks given in Detroit before the Men's Club for the Study of Religion, religious and literary notebooks, and travel journals.

The series in the collection are: Biographical; Correspondence; Writings; Speeches, sermons, lectures; Miscellaneous notes; Scriptures; Literary Studies; and Scrapbooks, journals, etc.

Michigan Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution; minutes of the state executive board, proceedings of the Michigan state conferences, publications, reports, and scrapbooks; also papers concerning their genealogical work, record of activities during World War I and II; historical files for individual chapters of the Michigan DAR; and photographs.

The records of the Daughters of the American Revolution of Michigan document its organization, history, and activities. As the state society of the DAR, the organization also collected material on the activities of the various local chapters. The records have been arranged into the following series: State Executive Board Minutes; State Conference Proceedings (original and published); Reports; Various Records of DAR State Historian; Miscellaneous; Chapter Records (original materials, collected material, and membership yearbooks); Publications; Scrapbooks; Topical files; and Photographs.

Biblical scholar, professor of Near Eastern Studies, and director of the Program on Studies in Religion at the University of Michigan. Subject files relating to his scholarly and organizational activities, notably with the American Schools of Oriental Research and as editor of the journal Biblical Archeologist; class notes from courses at Johns Hopkins, including courses taught by William F. Albright; and material concerning his personal and professional relationship with Albright (and Albright's literary estate).

Freedman's papers document his research and professional activities, most notably editing the journal Biblical Archeologist, and graduate studies under noted biblical scholar F.W. Albright. The papers have been divided into ten series: Subject Files, the Anchor Bible, the Genesis Project, the Religious Films Development Project, the Task Force on Biblical Authority, Class Notes, William F. Albright, Topical File, Michigan Quarterly Review, and Correspondence.

Anchor Bible, 1855-1983

The Anchor Bible series contains Freedman's correspondence between 1955 and 1983 with three of his editors: Joseph A. Fitzmeyer, editor of the Gospel of Luke, Jonathan Goldstein, editor of Maccabees, and P. Kyle McCarter, editor of Samuel. Freedman's detailed notes and suggestions on translation, and his editorial commentaries on the analysis of difficult passages are extremely interesting.

The files grouped under the 1965-1977 heading, part of the 2006 accession, contain correspondence between Freedman and the various contributors for the Anchor Bible Series. Some material is not dated and may fall outside the specified date range. The Anchor Bible Series is a series of retranslations of Old Testament biblical texts with notes and commentaries on the translation. The bulk of the material consists of comments, notes, and corrections by Freedman of the manuscripts submitted for publication. While many of the corrections are trivial, Freedman also gives a large amount of commentary expressing his opinions and thoughts about the ancient texts and appropriate translations. The folders are organized alphabetically by the manuscript author's last name.

Republican state representative, 1907-1912, speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives, 1911, state senator, 1919-1922, and official of the Farmers' National Council, the National Gleaner Federation, the Michigan State Grange and other farm and insurance organizations; includes correspondence, clippings, photographs and scrapbooks, concerning his political and business activities.

The collection spans the dates 1904-1926 and contains five linear feet of correspondence, clippings, photographs and scrapbooks concerning Baker's political and business activities.

The collection includes material documenting the site’s restoration process from DRLPs' inception until 2004, the DeTour Reef Cruise (2003-2005), the “Under the Stars” annual benefit dinner (2004-2005), DRLPS' work with Asbestos Management, 1999-2000, to clear the site before restoration, the official transfer of the site’s lease from the U.S Coast Guard to the DRLPS, financial reports and meeting minutes.

Materials covered by the DRLPS collection include the DeTour Reef Cruise (2003-2005), the “Under the Stars” annual benefit dinner (2004-2005), the group’s work with Asbestos Management, 1999-2000, to clear the site before restoration, the official transfer of the site’s lease from the U.S Coast Guard to the DRLPS, along with the group’s financial reports and meeting minutes.

The main focus of the collection is its material documenting the site’s restoration process from the group’s inception until 2004. Vital to the project was the securing of grant money, the collection including grant material from the Michigan Lighthouse Alliance for Preservation (MLAP), Michigan Coastal Management Program (MCMP), Clean Michigan Initiative (CMI), and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, as well as specific grants to restore the site’s fog horn, windows, and to rent a deck crane for heavy lifting.

Box 1 of the collections includes organizational materials such as bylaws and articles of incorporation.

Other materials found in the boxes include photographs, pamphlets, fliers, magazines, and banded manuals.

Also included in the collection is a set of 140 oversized drawings dating, 1975-1982, detailing the light’s features. These drawings are located in oversized folders #1 and #2. Oversized folder #3 includes oversized materials, such as plans and charts, which were pulled from the binders.

Drawings 89-98 in Oversized Folder #1 included in set as packet of legal-sized documents.

All pre-1998 materials are photocopies from various sources made in 1998.

Processing Notes: .5 cubic feet of peripheral material and approximately 45 duplicate drawings were returned to the donor per his request. Items that were fragile or acidic were copied and their originals withdrawn from the collection.
