The collection mostly documents Nicholas B. Fulton and Walter Gamble after the Civil War in which they both served in the Michigan Engineers and Mechanics Regiment. Also there is a Civil War certificate for Culwell Martin who served in the same regiment.

This collection contains materials related to Nicholas Fulton and Walter Gamble. The records concern topics of business and tax receipts, land records, pension claims, medicinal recipes and military appointment papers. The Gamble papers include hunting tags and registration, vehicle registration and correspondence.

Note: The collection also includes one military certificate issued to Culwell Martin. The account of his service during the Civil War according to the Record of First Michigan Engineers and Mechanics is noted in the biography section above.

This collection consists of a wide range of materials including biographical information, manuscripts, research and notes, and correspondence of Professor Maybee's (including Central Michigan University (CMU) Department of Social Sciences, Michigan Historical Society, personal, and student academics). Two boxes of the collection consist of papers and correspondence from Professor C.S. Larzelere, also of CMU.

This collection consists of a wide range of materials including biographical information, manuscripts, research and notes, and correspondence (including Central Michigan University (CMU) Department of Social Sciences, Michigan Historical Society, personal, and student academics). The collection is widely related to the history of Michigan and the history of Central Michigan University. Correspondence with President Dwight D. Eisenhower and correspondence between H.L. Menckin and Mr. Leighly can be found in box 2 of the collection. Telegrams from the following people can be found in box 8: Richard Nixon, Congressman Elford A. Cederberg, Governor G. Mennen Williams, and Arthur S. Flemming (Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare). Box 4 of the collection holds a Correspondence from Henry Miller, and Box 6 has newspaper clippings related to Senator Robert Griffin, and alumni of CMU.

1 (Boxes 11-12). Oversized folder 4 includes his and related certificates and diplomas, 1835, 1925. This collection was processed by three student processors: Anjali Grose, Tressa Graves, Bronwyn Mroz Benson.

Materials processed by Anjali Grose largely include correspondence related to: the Central Michigan University (CMU) Department of Social Sciences; the Michigan Historical Society Trustees and Committees; the Michigan Historical Society about state conferences; student academic; and personal information. Other materials processed by A. Grose include a collection of glass slides used for educational purposes (most of these slides were withdrawn); research and a rough draft of a paper on Father Nouvel; newspaper clippings (copies) on R.H. Maybee, H.C. Maybee, and B. Maybee; programs for the memorial services of R.H. Maybee and H.C. Maybee; photographs and related correspondence; miscellaneous research, notes, and sources; and the scrapbook materials found in Box 9.

Materials processed by Bronwyn Benson include Maybee’s Master’s Thesis, the manuscripts for his publications and speeches, the transcripts of sources he used for his research, and a newspaper article relating to a mystery rock Maybee was researching; correspondence from Dwight Eisenhower and H. L. Mencken; documents relating to CMU including the dictation discs and reel-to-reel tapes, and the architectural plans for a possible new building; and the documents pertaining to Claude S. Larzelere and his wife including speeches, teaching notes, and diplomas.

Materials processed by Tressa Graves include biographical information pertaining to Maybee’s research, information on Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School, United States Navy V12 program at CMU during World War II and various data related to the surrounding area and CMU. Other materials included the telegrams from Richard Nixon, Congressman Elford A. Cederberg, Governor G. Mennen Williams, and Arthur S. Flemming, updated information on the Prof. Charles Bellows’ desk (up until the new Maybee information it was presumed to be Charles Grawn’s), Claude S. Larzelere’s certificates and diplomas, and a letter from Henry Miller. Besides the significant materials, most of the materials that were processed were withdrawn.

What did others process? Other materials found include two 16mm films, seven glass slides used for educational purposes, photographs, four Reel-to-Reel tapes, pamphlets and catalogues from a scrapbook on CMU. Notecards are organized by size into 5 boxes (Boxes 13-17) pertaining to research by R.H. Maybee and CMU faculty members, and oversize materials including Federal Census data for Isabella County, Michigan, CMU account books, and others.

Oversized folders 1-3 include materials collected by Maybee, a proposal by architects, undated; notes on CMU accounts, 1894-1923; and notes on Rolland Township, Isabella County, Michigan Federal Census data, 1860.

In addition to this collection, papers of Claude S. Larzelere and publications by both Maybee and Larzelere are separately cataloged and housed in the Clarke Historical Library. Maybee also wrote an article on David Ward which was published in Michigan History (32, 1, March 1948). Copies of Maybee's notes on CMU history may also be found in the Central Michigan University 75th Anniversary collection in the Clarke.

Processing Note: A total of 24 cubic feet was withdrawn from this collection including duplicates, published items, reading materials, generic correspondence, generic applications, resumes, interview materials, and student papers.

The Mackay and Vansittart family collection is made up of correspondence, legal documents, financial records, and maps regarding legal and financial disputes over land in Edinburgh, Scotland, and Ontario, Canada. The cases involved Mary Charity Vansittart, the daughter of Admiral Henry Vansittart, and her husband, Spencer Mackay.

The Mackay papers (48 items) are made up of correspondence, legal documents, financial records, and maps regarding disputes over land in Edinburgh, Scotland, and Ontario, Canada.

The Correspondence series (30 items) includes letters written by and addressed to Mary Vansittart Mackay, as well as letters by and to other interested parties, including Meaburn Tatham, Roger Rollo Hunter, and F. D. Berwick. The letters, mainly from correspondents in Toronto, London, and Edinburgh, concern disputes over finances, land, and Spencer Mackay's estate. Later items relate to property leases in Edinburgh.

The Documents series (16 items) contains 2 subseries: Legal Documents (6 items) and Financial Records (10 items), which both pertain to disputes over the Mackay estate and property. Items include a settlement among Admiral Henry Vansittart, Robert Riddell, and Roger Rollo Hunter about the marriage of Mary Charity Vansittart and Spencer Mackay (June 8, 1838), as well as documents concerning inheritances. Some of the material pertains to the construction of a villa for Mary Vansittart Mackay at Cluny Gardens, Edinburgh.

Two colored manuscript Maps show the village of Port Franks, Ontario, and the Vansittart estate in Mara Township, Ontario (now part of Ramara).

The collection includes: letters, catalogs, photographs, personal and business correspondence, clippings (copies), specifications, time books, scrapbooks, genealogical materials, and other materials.

The collection was process by different groups of student processors over years. Series 1 Papers, 1833, 1976, undated, 3.5 cubic ft. (in 7 boxes, 2 Ov. v.)

Series 1 contains account books, biographical information, catalogues, correspondence, financial and insurance documents, receipts, photographs, the Wedgeway Service Letter and yearly planners. Material also covers the city of Saginaw and various institutions within the city. Newspaper clippings include articles related to Saginaw, the Morley Brothers, the fire of 1949, and advertising. Various recipes within the collection offer remedies for physical ailments. Memorabilia includes materials from the National Rifle Association and World War II. The Lest We Forget 1952 includes an entry on October 17, 1952 about Representative Richard Nixon running for office.

Law firm records include legal records of estates, divorces, chancery cases, and debt collection, correspondence, and numerous land records. McKee family records are also included.

The collection includes many types of legal records, including: Estates, Divorces, Chancery Cases, and debt collection papers. Correspondence is from clients, lawyers, legal firms, banks, and various land offices. Some of the larger case files include those of the Bank of Lansingburgh (New York) and the Indian Mill Creek Salt Company (Grand Rapids, Mich.). Numerous land records include: State Tax Deeds, Indentures, Mortgages, Bounty Lands for Veterans and their widows, Deeds, Plat Maps, and Receipts for land. The firm had many clients in Michigan and New York (State).

McKee family records include family correspondence, 1840s-1874, undated; legal cases, and Aaron McKee’s (father of James McKee) inheritance case, 1856-1864. Also included is the 1862 license for Ball and McKee and a letter of protest over the removal of the soldiers’ memorial in Grand Rapids, 1908.

Processing Note: Personal materials of John Ball were apparently removed when this collection first came to the Clarke and became the John Ball Family Papers.

This is an incomplete, unofficial set of Vernon (Isabella County, Mich. : Township) Township records. Also included are three oversized scrapbooks and a copy of the graves in a cemetery.

The collection includes a miscellaneous group of incomplete township records. Most of the records are some type of election records, including absentee voter applications and lists, appointments, board of election inspectors miscellaneous, bonds, caucus meeting minutes, election returns, instruction ballot, oaths of office and acceptances, resignations and tally sheets, some of which are in book form. Other township records include Board of School Inspectors petitions, a dog tax list, meeting minutes, one set each) for the highway commissioners and township board, miscellaneous correspondence and receipts, and sheep damage bills.

Also included with the donation are three oversized volumes, all scrapbooks of mostly newspaper articles. Volume I, 1915-1969, mostly undated, includes mid-Michigan births, deaths, marriages, and events from local newspapers. Volume II, 1961-1966, documents mostly news of Shepherd high school, including sports, homecoming, and students. Other articles document soldiers, babies, some Winn, Michigan, news, two images with text of Representative Al Cederberg, and articles by Ruth Lau and Ida Clark. Volume III, 1914-1918, and 1941-1945, mostly document Isabella County, Michigan news articles of World War II soldiers, women who served, their letters, obituaries, and related article. There are two pages of WWI material, including an image with text of members of the Mount Pleasant Indian School who enlisted with a list of WWI dead soldiers from Isabella County on the back.

An oversized copy of the graves of Woodland Cemetery (Rosebush, Michigan), undated, on greased paper completes the collection. The location of the cemetery was identified by the donor. The copy includes names from gravestones but not the dates. The copy was repaired at one point with scotch tape, which was removed by the archivist, so now the copy is in two pieces. The copy has sustained some stain damage from water and perhaps mildew, although there is no odor.

Processing Note: Three live birth certificates were sent to the Michigan Department of Health. According to the township record schedule most of these records should have already been destroyed. However, they are now kept as examples. Acidic materials or those with mold were copied and the originals were withdrawn from the collection, totaling approximately .25 cubic feet.

D. H. Day Family Papers include: correspondence; photographs; land records; scrapbooks; scrapbook pages; student grade records; recollections; a wooden sign; newspaper clippings (copies); and personal materials.

The D. H. Day Family Papers, 1860,2009, and undated, contains correspondence, photographs, student grade records, scrapbooks, scrapbook pages, recollections, newspaper clippings (copies), a wooden sign, and personal materials about members of the extended Day family. The collection materials focus on D. H. Day I and Eva Farrant Day, Ida Farrant, D. H. Day II and Helen Gunckel Day, D. H. Day III, and Louis Warnes and Marion Day Warnes. Business and real estate related material include Glen Haven Canning Company, D. H. Day General Store, D. H. Day Sawmill, Oswegatchi Farm, and Day Forest. While the majority of the materials were created by members of the Day family, some were created by George Weeks for his research and books about the Glen Haven area. Correspondence between Weeks and various members of the Day family exists in this collection and the George Weeks Papers. Researchers may also be interested in the George Weeks Papers and his books about the Sand Dunes National Lakeshore area, and D. H. Day’s book Glen Lake Region, 1911, which are separately cataloged in the Clarke.

The collection includes family correspondence, newspaper clippings (copies), stereographs, and certificates of appointment as Notaries Public for Frank and Moses. The 1881 correspondence describes Frank and Samuel’s experiences surveying in Colorado and Utah, the physical description of states and Mormons.

One oversized Certificate, appointing Moses as postmaster of Climax Prairie, Michigan, 1850, which was recorded as being purchased with the collection is now missing.

The collection includes genealogical and biographical information and family history, family, records related to family businesses and photographs. Also, a 1962 film of the University of Michigan football team training.

The Monroe Brown Family Papers collection focuses on the Monroe Brown family history. The collections contains materials related to genealogical research the family conducted: family histories and biographical essays, newspaper clippings and articles, photographs, as well as materials related to the Van Buren County history. The Papers also include business records from Citizens Trust and Savings Bank, a business ledger with transactions dating to 1899, as well as two volumes with clippings of "Reports of the Conditions" of Kalamazoo area banks. Family papers also include materials related to the care of the Monroe family Lakeview Cemetery plots in South Haven, Mich.

There is a small number of records related to the Brown family's history at the University of Michiga, including a program from the 1982 Hall of Honor induction ceremony, a 1962 film "Spring Football Scrimmage," and newspaper clippings.
