Records of the Mitchell and McClure Lumber Company of Saginaw, Michigan and Duluth, Minnesota. Correspondence and financial papers concerning company land and lumbering enterprises, and later activities in home building, silo construction, and silage production; records of A.J. Stevens & Co. and McClure-Stevens Land Company of Gladwin, Michigan also business files and diaries of company co-founder, William C. McClure.

The record group is divided into the following series: Mitchell and McClure Lumber Company; William C. McClure materials; Other Business Enterprises; and Financial records. In addition to the records of the company, the record group includes documentation of other enterprises, such as home building and silo construction and silage production. There are also some records of the A.J. Stevens Land Company of Gladwin, Michigan. The William C. McClure series is important for the run of personal diaries maintained by McClure in the period of 1872-1903.

Residents of Calhoun and Lenawee counties, Michigan. Family letters and documents.

This is a collection of family letters preserved by Betsey Mitchell Strong and donated to the Michigan Historical Collections by her grandson Homer Dennis Strong. The collection consists of approximately 1400 family letters and documents covering the period of 1836 to 1925 and three volumes of transcriptions of the documents made by Doris Boldt.

The collection is maintained in numbered envelopes in approximate chronological order. In 1988, the library received a first accession of some 440 letters with a register of these letters compiled by Doris Boldt. This register included document number, date, recipient, sender, and notes about contents.

In 1990, Mr. Strong donated nearly 1000 additional letters and documents with typed transcriptions of the collection made by Doris Boldt. In the two year interim since the first accession, however, Boldt had created a new numbering sequence for the collection. This numbers refer to the pages of the transcription volumes. Once again, Boldt provided a register to letters. This register includes both original numbers and revised numbers.

Miscellaneous county records.

The record group has been arranged into the following series: School records; Elections; Taxation, assessments, etc.; Census reports; and Miscellaneous. Items of interest include school reports, 1835-1883 and school census, 1914 and 1920; election registrations, poll lists and election returns, 1820-1888; highway assessment and tax records, 1819-1943; assessment roll of Milan township, Michigan, 1902, lists and abstracts of sales of state lands, 1860-1899; tavern permits, 1836-1838; abstracts of permits, occupations and new establishments, 1830-1840; bonds, 1822 and 1841-1892; drain survey, 1861; certificates of sales of swamp lands, 1867; census reports of Port Lawrence township (later part of Ohio), 1827, and Ida township, 1837; military lists,1869-1886; and contracts of Monroe County Detecting Society (vigilance committee) for 1848 and 1853.

Ann Arbor, Michigan family. Ledger, of Elijah W. Morgan, attorney and businessman, compiled in the 1840's containing his comments and evaluations of business and professional abilities of early businessmen of Washtenaw County, Michigan; correspondence, autobiography, and other miscellaneous business papers and deeds; also correspondence, drawings, and writings of his wife Lucy Stow Morgan, including letter describing life and customs in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1831; and other papers of Elijah's parents, including autobiographies of Elisha Morgan and Polly Babcock Morgan.

The Morgan family collection consists primarily of the personal and business papers of Elijah W. Morgan, one of Ann Arbor's pioneer citizens who had a distinguished career as an attorney and banker; letters and other materials of his wife Lucy Stow Morgan; and autobiographies and scattered papers of Elijah's parents, Elisha and Polly Babcock Morgan of Watertown, New York.

The bulk of the collection consists of the personal and business papers of Elijah W. Morgan. This includes correspondence (1821-1889), autobiographical material, essays on religion and temperance, and a large section of business and financial papers generated as a result of his law practice or his various business dealings.

Ypsilanti, Michigan, businessman and a soldier in the Eighteenth Michigan Infantry and an officer in the Forty-fourth U.S. Colored Infantry during the Civil War. Includes anutobiographical sketch and reminiscencesof the Civil War; also correspondence and papers relating to war service and subsequent efforts to receive government pension; deed to property; and photographs.

The Morris Stuart Hall papers document the experiences of an officer in the Union Army during the Civil War as well as in its aftermath. In addition to direct observations and personal opinions, the collection provides insight into the role and perception of African American soldiers who fought in the war. The collection is organized into a single series, Military papers.

Dean of the College of Engineering of the University of Michigan; correspondence, letter books, appraisals and reports, lectures, blueprints, newspaper clippings, photographs, and other materials concerning his activities as dean of the College of Engineering, engineer for the U.S.S. Yosemite in the Spanish American War, chairman of the Block Signal and Train Control Board, Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in 1924, and coordinator for the P.W.A. in Michigan in 1933-1935; also genealogical materials on the Cooley family.

The Mortimer E. Cooley papers consists of correspondence, subject files, personal materials, and photographs detailing the professional career and activities of a distinguished engineering educator. The collection has been arranged into the following series: Correspondence; Topical Files; University of Michigan and College of Engineering materials; Genealogical and Miscellaneous; Arbitration, appraisal, and consultation files; Photographs; Naval Logs; and Testimonial and celebratory materials. Box 47 was eliminated during 2001 reprocessing.

Jackson, Michigan, women’s organization devoted to the mental improvement of its members through lectures and presentations; minutes of club meetings, yearbooks and programs, scrapbooks and miscellaneous other records.

The records of the Mosaic Club of Jackson, Michigan reflect the activities and interests typical of women's clubs in the late 19th and early 20th century. The record group has been arranged in into the following series: Minutes; Yearbooks and Programs; and Other Records.

Firm established in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the mid-nineteenth century as a furniture-undertaking business. Ledgers and daybooks of furniture and undertaking business, 1846-1867; funeral record books, 1882-1916, containing such vital information as name, date of death, age, cause of death, and occupation; register, 1919-1940, of funerals, containing names only. The records from May 1909 through 1916 include occasional information about deceased's parents.

Williamston, Ingham County, Michigan, family. Financial records, clippings, and correspondence relating to Mullett Farm and John Mullett, surveyor; extract, 1864, from Meridian Township Register Book; letterpress book, journal, and correspondence, 1852-1893, of John H. Forster, surveyor, agent for Pewabic Mining Company, Hancock, Mich., and later owner of Springbrook Farm, Ingham County, Michigan; diary, 1840-1841, of Catherine Hall; and map, 1859, of Mullett Farm; and photographs.

The Mullett family collection contains many useful descriptions of the state, and is a good source of information for some of the state's economic and topographic conditions during the 19th century. The papers, 1825-1936, are broken down into four series.

Family of Baptist ministers from New York state and southwestern Michigan; papers of Harvey Munger, his son William L. Munger, William's wife Octavia and other members of the Munger, Griffin, and Brown family.

The collection is organized by family member. The papers of Harvey Munger include correspondence and a journal/account book (1835-1847). The papers of William L. Munger include letters received from Walter Rauschenbusch (1886-1918), sermons, writings and articles, and other papers relating to his activities with the Michigan Anti- Saloon League. The Octavia Griffin Munger papers include correspondence with family members and friends, writings, and papers relating to her work with the Woman's Baptist Home and Missionary Society of Michigan. There are also small files of materials from other members of the Munger family that primarily contain correspondence. Of note are papers of Solomon Brown dating back to the eighteenth century and a letter received by Nancy Brown in 1841 from Sault Ste. Marie missionary, Abel Bingham, 1841. The collection also includes a copy of a letter written by Angie Bingham Gilbert describing events surrounding the murder of James Schoolcraft by John Tanner. Tanner had formerly been a captive of the Indians in the 1840s in the Sault Ste. Marie area of Michigan.
