The series contains materials created and collected by the Band members during the Tour and includes correspondence, invitations, programs, news articles and reviews, pins, band tour photos and memorabilia, recordings of concerts and events, and recorded recollections. Also included materials related to the 1981, 1984, and 2011 reunions (see The 50th Anniversary Reunion and Return to Russia Tour series for more materials). The series is arranged into alphabetically organized sub-series, each representing material donated by an individual Band member. The Recollections and Recordings sub-series contains material that was donated by different donors.

The collection contains materials collected by the University of Michigan Symphony Band Tour members during the Band's international tour through the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe and the Near East, February through June, 1961. Also, materials created during the 2011-2012, and 2019 Band reunions. Collection materials include clippings, correspondence, photographs, video recordings, programs, and scrapbooks.

The collection is composed of four series, the content of which includes clippings, correspondence, photographs, programs, and scrapbooks. The 1961 Tour series contains materials created and collected during the tour. A small amount of material is related to the 1981 and 1984 reunions. The 50th Anniversary Reunion and Return to Russia Tour series contains materials created and collected during the 2012 reunion tour to Moscow and St. Petersburg. One folder containing obituaries. The final series documents the 58th anniversary reunion, held at the University of Michigan in 2019.

(Transcription of Loren Mayhew's diary from The University of Michigan's Tour Band's 15 week cultural exchange tour to the Soviet Union and nine Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Eastern European countries in 1961. The diary documents the experiences of Mayhew and his bandmates as they traveled to and around the Societ Union and other countries, met world leaders, and played in the concert halls of Europe as well as Carnegie Hall. Mayhew played assistant second horn during the tour and third horn during the recording session at Carnegie Hall at the end of the tour.)
