Professor of psychology, electrical engineering, and computer science at the University of Michigan beginning in 1959. Holland developed the concept of "genetic algorithms," research specializations in complex adaptive systems and artificial intelligence. First recipient of a computer science PhD at the University of Michigan, and a 1992 recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship.
