Office headed by F. Clever Bald, and established to collect materials documenting activities of University of Michigan during World War II. Includes files documenting activities of the War Historian as well as various war related special programs including records of the Army Japanese Language School; files of Marvin Niehuss, the coordinator of Emergency Training at the university; records of the Civil Affairs Training School; and records of the University War Board.

The records of the University War Historian contain a wealth of information about the university's war effort during the Second World War. They include correspondence, reports and other material generated by the War Historian's office as well as records of special war related programs and projects at the university and documentation of student activities on campus and of students and alumni who served in the war.

Among the programs which are documented in the University War Historian records are the Japanese Language School; the Civil Affairs Training School (CATS), Navy V-12 Program, Judge Advocates General School (JAGS), and Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP), which prepared their students to administer occupied countries; specialized engineering and public health programs; student groups; and programs promoting veterans' readjustment to civilian life. Also well documented is the work of the University Extension Service which taught courses to defense workers as well as to men and women in the armed services. Material includes contracts with the federal government, reports from various programs, correspondence, and administrative files. The records also detail the work of the University War Board which coordinated university planning for the war effort.

The records are organized into four series: University War Board, U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and Miscellaneous Programs and Topical Files. Although the collection is largely unprocessed, the files are accurately labeled and accessible for research.

Files concerning his war activities, including correspondence, scripts, course materials and printed matter; and photographs.

The Kenneth Rowe Collection, though covering the period 1940-1953, largely concerns the years of World War II and the activities of Rove as chairman of the Committee on War Activities for the American Educational Theatre Association (AETA); as secretary of the Theatre for Victory Council; as consultant to the National Theatre Conference (NTC), official agency for all dramatic activities of the Combined Armed Forces; and as drama consultant to the U.S. Department of Treasury, the Office of Civil Defense, and the Office of Education. Rowe's work in all of these efforts concerned the use of drama as a propaganda tool to raise morale and to define America's goals.

The Rowe collection consists of two linear feet of correspondence, reports, newsletters, play scripts, and printed material. The collection begins with general correspondence followed by files which have been arranged by the name of theatre organizations in which Rove was involved.

Records, 1940-1945, of the Engineering Science and Management War Training Program at the University of Michigan during World War II. Includes diaries, August 1941-August 1945, of Robert H. Sherlock, coordinator of the program.

The Maurice C. Greenbaum papers were written by him to his fiancée, Beatrice Weiner, during the 1940 -- 1941 academic year. Measuring 0.25 (1 box), the correspondence captures student life and activity at the University of Michigan on the precipice of World War II. Topics include collegiate football, academic life, social events, career prospects, travel and military action from the perspective of a young Jewish male.

Albert Easton White was a professor of Metallurgical Engineering and Director of the Engineering Research Institute. The collection consists of about 75 items of correspondence and about 10 photographs from events throughout his career.

The collection consists of two series, Correspondence and Photographs.

Correspondence includes primarily letters two Professor White, especially around the time of his retirement in 1953. The series also contains a few reports on the research activities in engineering at the University of Michigan.

Photographs contains images from different stages of Professor White's career, including the groundbreaking of the Engineering building on North Campus, and social events associated with the American Society of Metals.

The Ruth Buchanan collection consists largely of letters received from University of Michigan students and alumni serving in the military during World War II and the Korean War. Other letters commending her service during the war were received from Dwight Eisenhower and Chester Nimitz. A smaller portion of the collection includes research material on covered bridges in Michigan. Within her other non-war related correspondence, there is a letter from Jane Addams, Nov. 4, 1931. The photograph series includes portraits and informal photographs of Buchanan in the museum where she worked for thirty years; photos of university students, alumni, and Ann Arbor residents in military service during World War II and the Korean War; photos of NROTC and Navy V-12 students at the University of Michigan during World War II; photos of covered bridges and of Michigan National Guard exercises at Camp Grayling; and a drawing of Elbridge F. Bacon.

A division of the Department of Surgery of the University of Michigan Hospital, established the nation's first residency training program in thoracic surgery in 1928; documents development of the program at Michigan and advances in surgical procedures, includes correspondence, operation notes, case studies, and photographs and negatives of patients and surgical procedures.

The records of the Section of Thoracic Surgery document the growth and development of thoracic surgery at the University of Michigan from its origins as a clinic to its emergence as a specialized section within the Department of Surgery. The records, covering the period from 1927 to 1960, are comprised of correspondence, operation notes, case studies, and photographs and negatives of patients and surgical procedures. Together, these materials richly illustrate the development of thoracic surgery techniques during the 1930s and 1940s.

Because patient names appear throughout the record group as well as in the photographs and negatives, patient privacy is a major concern and researchers must comply with the access restrictions described elsewhere in this finding aid.
