Allan Schreiber papers, 1968-1988

Allan Schreiber, a teacher at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, was part of an initiative in the 1970s to develop an alternative high school, known as Earthworks. Schreiber was a teacher and the head of Earthworks for most of its existence. The papers include materials on Earthworks background and history, founding and planning materials, correspondence, materials on the merger with Community High School, printed works and annual reports, evaluations and studies of the school, field trip logs, and audiovisual material.

Elizabeth Caroline Crosby Papers, 1918-1983 (majority within 1935-1980)

The Elizabeth C. Crosby collection consists of the personal and professional papers of a woman pioneer in the field of neuroanatomy. Crosby taught anatomy at the University of Michigan from 1920 to 1958 and authored many respected publications in the field of biology.

The Crosby collection consists of two separate acquisitions; Crosby's personal donation of correspondence, biographical and research materials in 1982 and Richard C. Schneider's donation of Crosby's manuscripts, photographs and audiovisual materials in 1994. Dr. Richard C. Schneider, a close friend and colleague of Crosby's, accumulated additional Crosby materials during his unsuccessful attempt to write a complete biography of Crosby; his unfinished manuscript is contained within the collection. The collection has been arranged into the following series: Biographical Materials, Correspondence, Biographical material (collected or researched), Awards and Honors, Manuscripts and Articles, Publishers, Research, Conferences, Lectures, Organizations, Photographs and Audiovisual Materials.


Emerson F. Powrie and Gwendolyn Sutton Powrie papers, 1947-1972 (majority within 1956-1970)

Papers of Emerson F. Powrie, Ann Arbor, MI public schools teacher (1945-1948), principal (1948-1971), and Central Administration employee (1972-1977); and his wife Gwendolyn Sutton Powrie, teacher for the hearing-impaired children.

The Powrie family papers have been divided into three series: Emerson F. Powrie papers; Gwendolyn Sutton Powrie papers; and Visual Materials.

The Emerson F. Powrie's papers represent the bulk of the collection. The collection follows Powrie's career as an educator and Ann Arbor Public Schools Principal, and reflects on challenges and developments that took place in Ann Arbor Public Schools system in 1950s-early 1970s. Materials shed light on process of racial desegregation in schools among students as well as faculty; important demographic, social and economic changes in the area, and their effect on the student body, (i.e., school enrollment, racial and socio-economic composition of classes, etc.). Topics of teachers' education and training, and religion in public schools are prominent in correspondence.

The Gwendolyn Sutton Powrie's papers include her writings and research materials on the subject of teaching the hearing-impaired children.


Emmett N. Leith papers, 1954-2005

Emmett Leith (1927 - 2005), former Professor of Engineering at the University of Michigan, is known as one of the fathers of holography for his advances in 1963 that made the industry possible. He was a well-regarded teacher. The Leith papers span his entire professional career and include background information, articles, teaching and presentation materials, topical and chronological research files (notes, reports, and illustrations).

The Bentley Historical Library received the materials in this collection in three accessions. The first came from Emmett Leith himself in 2000. Tthe second and third accessions came from the University of Michigan, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 2006 and 2016. The collection is comprised of five series: Background; Articles, 1959-2006; Teaching, 1966-2004; Research; and George Stroke. The materials were received with very little apparent order. Consequently, the series and subseries are artificial with the exception of the Articles Series which, for the most part, was well organized.


Jerome W. Conn papers, 1931-1994 (majority within 1954-1975)

Professor internal medicine and director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Michigan. Conn was discoverer of Primary Aldosteronism (Conn's Syndrome) and its cure through the surgical removal of the adrenal tumor. The collection has been divided into three series: personal, professional, and topical files. The collection includes correspondence, research files and notes, subject files, published materials, and photographs relating to his research and other professional activities.

Percy Bates papers, 1974-1984

Papers of Percy Bates, an influential African American professor at the University of Michigan School of Education. Materials in the collection relate to his work as Principle Investigator on the Dean's Project on Mainstreaming, a grant project funded by the Bureau of Education for the Handicapped at the U.S. Department of Education. The collection includes teacher training materials, worksheets, case studies, grant information, project models and reference articles, interview questions, and other project materials.

The Percy Bates papers contains papers related to Bates' work as Principal Investigator on the Dean's Project on Mainstreaming, a grant project at the Universisty of Michigan's School of Education. The project trained educators how to integrate special education students into the regular classroom. The materials illustrate some of the challenges of mainstreaming faced by educators, students and parents and how educators were trained to manage these issues. The training materials also demonstrate the core knowledge, skills and attitudes the project team believed educators needed to create a welcoming classroom environment for all students.

The collection has been organized into two series. The Project Materials series contains project planning documents, conceptual models, reference reports and working drafts developed by the project team. The Educational Materials series features copies of the informational packets, worksheets, case studies and simulations developed to train teachers on mainstreaming.

Ted Heusel Papers, 1968-1974

Ann Arbor, Michigan, radio personality and member of the Ann Arbor (Mich.) Board of Education, 1968-1973. Materials relating to his service on the school board; subjects covered include disruptions in the schools, teacher strikes, alleged racial and sexual bias in the school system, and the searches for school superintendents.

The papers of Ted Heusel relate to his tenure on the Ann Arbor Board of Education. While the dates of the collection are 1968-1974, the bulk of the material is from 1972-1973. The collection has been arranged into six series: Correspondence, Memoranda, Minutes and Notes, Topical Files, Reports, and Sound Recordings.

The Correspondence and Memoranda series consist basically of communications between board members and school administrators, but including also some communications with teachers and parents. These files are in chronological order.

Minutes and Notes have been arranged chronologically by type of meeting: briefing session, executive session, or regular meeting. There are no minutes and notes for 1971.

Topical Files are in alphabetical order. Included in these files are clippings, minutes and recommendations of various committees, curriculum guides data sheets, and surveys. many of the concerns of the Board at this time, such as discipline policy, a humaneness in education policy, multi-ethnic curriculum, and the formulation of goals and objectives for the school system, are documented in this series of the collection.

The Reports relate to both the educational program and to physical facilities of the Ann Arbor Public Schools.

The Sound Recordings were prepared in the early 1970's in conjunction with Heusel's radio program, and are not directly related to the Board of Education. They do, however, include the opinions of listeners who called in to express their views during the teachers' strike as well as news, interviews, and comments on other local events and personalities.
