After visiting the Smithsonian Institution and other sites in Washington, D.C., the traveler went to West Virginia by stage. On board the Buck Eye State, an Ohio River steamer, the author discussed their curiosity about a fellow passenger. The final page of the journal contains a list of travel expenses.
