The Nichols & Shepard Company records date from the late nineteenth century to the time when the company sold out to the Oliver Corporation. There is very little material prior to the 1880s and thus the first thirty years of the company's history is without documentation. The minutes of the company's board of directors date back to 1886 and extend to 1931. A large portion of the record group consists of financial materials, reports, and ledgers.

The Roger Irving Wykes papers are comprised of four series: Correspondence; Michigan Constitutional Convention, 1907-1908; Miscellaneous; and Litigation Case Files. Most of the correspondence relates to his campaign for delegate to the Constitutional Convention. The great bulk of the Litigation series relates to his participation in the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railroad Company Rate Case.

The Albert J. Schimpke collection consists of photographs, audio-tapes, and other materials collected by Mr. Schimpke relating to Manistee, Michigan, especially the activities of one of its most prominent local lumbermen, Richard G. Peters.

Documenting his business and public service activities, the Herman Lunden papers cover the period from the late 1890s to 1929. The collection includes Biographical/Personal material; Correspondence; Kneeland-Bigelow records; and an Alphabetical File.

The Christian A. Burck photograph collection is comprised of photoprints made from glass negatives. Scenes include views of people, buildings, and activities in and near Monroe, Michigan, as well as student activities at the University of Michigan.

Reports of comprehensive Michigan Railroad Appraisal, providing evaluations of every railroad in the state, directed by Mortimer E. Cooley at the request of Governor Hazen Pingree; also appraisals of plank roads and canals built in Michigan.

The record group consists of nine volumes of Michigan railroad appraisal reports. The appendix titled "List of Physical Items Inventoried" lists the types of property, machinery and equipment inventoried in the appraisals.
