Literary magazine [originally named the New American Review] founded and edited by Theodore Solotaroff. Correspondence, working files for each issue, and administrative topical files.

In 1981, Bantam, in association with Solotaroff, donated the records of American Review to the Michigan Historical Collections. The collection consists of fourteen linear feet of correspondence, issue files, and administrative topical files. The correspondence covers the years 1967 to 1970 only, and concerns the establishment of the magazine, requests for manuscripts, and communications with agents. The issues files document the work that went into each issue. This series has been arranged by issue, and then alphabetically by author. These files, unfortunately, contain but a scattering of correspondence, consisting instead largely of drafts of articles, and galleys with corrections made by the authors and editors. The administrative topical files consist of reviews of each issue, subscription and promotional material, and financial miscellanea. Included are notebooks listing articles submitted and accepted, payments, and agents.

Magazine publishing company, principally Esquire magazine, originally edited by Arnold Gingrich, records include editorial files with drafts and manuscripts of articles and some correspondence with authors and some business records.

The records of Esquire Magazine detail the management and operation of one of the nation's principal literary and current events periodical of the middle decades of the twentieth century. The bulk of the material in the collection consists of research and editorial files for each article published in Esquire.

Although the records contained in the Esquire record group cover only a portion of the magazine's development, they can be used in conjunction with the Arnold Gingrich collection, also on file at the Bentley Historical Library to document one of the most influential publishing ventures of the twentieth century.

Also included is a handwritten essay on "Physical and Moral Courage," and a Wilmington, Delaware, bond related to the estate of Edwin A. Wilson, April 1, 1859.

The creator of these commonplace books, writing in a dense, consistent hand, recorded passages from a wide range of authors that include Plato, Aristotle, Tertullian, Geoffrey Chaucer, Martin Luther, Nathanial Hawthorne, Charles Dickens, Baden Powell, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and others. Publication notices and excerpts of literary reviews are frequently noted. Passages often include references to the author or the publication source. Latin, Greek, and Hebrew words or lines periodically appear as well.

Included in the collection is a handwritten essay, titled, "Physical and Moral Courage", exploring these ideas within the framework of Ancient Spartan society, as well as their relationship to the legacy of Julius Caesar. A partially-printed bond dated April 1, 1859, from Joseph C. Seed to David Craig and William Tatnall in Wilmington, Delaware, pertains to the estate of Edwin A. Wilson.

Popular novelist, author of The Robe and Magnificent Obsession, and minister of the First Congregational Church of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Correspondence with his family, publishers and other authors concerning his work and including comments on national politics, Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman, and World War II; also manuscripts of addresses, articles, sermons, and novels; scrapbooks; and photographs.

The Douglas papers consist of material collected by his daughters, Virginia Douglas Dawson and Betty Douglas Wilson Herman, in the preparation of their biography of their father, The Shape of Sunday. The collection has been arranged into the following series: Correspondence; Ministerial Activities; Literary Career; Miscellaneous and personal; and Scrapbooks.

The collection includes CD recordings of book signings, which is the focus of the collection, WCMU recording and release forms, a list of Michigan authors and their writings, a written calendar of Michigan authors’ book signings, and fliers for book signings.

The collection was kept by the Clarke in a number of folders, which were titled and dated. Materials were processed by format, then in alphabetical and chronological order. Materials covered by the Michigan Authors collection include CD recordings of book signings, which is the focus of the collection, WCMU recording and release forms, a list of Michigan authors and their writings, a written calendar of Michigan authors’ book signings, and fliers for book signings.

Processing Notes: One folder of peripheral material was withdrawn from the collection. Items that were fragile or acidic were copied and their originals withdrawn from the collection.
