Research papers on topics relating to Michigan history and the history of the University of Michigan written by students in the History Department Undergraduate Honors Program.

Student papers, 1930-1987 prepared for classes in history at the University of Michigan (primarily Michigan history class taught by Lewis G. VanderVelde, but also including research papers for classes taught by Sidney Fine and others); topics concern Michigan social and political history; Michigan biography and bibliography; and local community history.

The student papers are organized alphabetically by author in two series, which are similar in date range and topics covered. Topics of papers concern Michigan social and political history; Michigan biography and bibliography; local community history and University of Michigan history. A topical index to the papers is available in the first box of the collection.

Records of the Personnel Office include personnel policies and procedures; memoranda to the deans, directors and department heads; negotiations with and the administration of the contract with the Graduate Employees' Union; and activities with numerous employees' unions at the University of Michigan.

The Personnel Office records comprise 31 linear feet and span the 1940s through the early 1990s. These records document the activities of the office prior to its 1994 consolidation with the Affirmative Action Office. The office is now part of the Office of University Human Resources, with many of its original responsibilities performed by its sub-unit, Academic Human Resources.

The records have been filed as received from the unit in periodic accessions. As such, there is considerable overlap in topics and dates of coverage within the various records series. Files relating to specific promotion and tenure cases are in a separate record group, University of Michigan Office of Academic Human Resources Promotion Casebooks. Detroit, Michigan, social worker, executive vice president of the Children's Fund of Michigan, and chairman of various relief commissions during the depression. Materials relating to his welfare activities, his interests in mental health and the work of the American Red Cross, and his general interest in the field of social work; also papers detailing his activities with the Detroit Prismatic Club; essays concerning the legislation of prohibition in Michigan; and photographs and sound recordings.

The William J. Norton collection relates mainly to relating to his welfare activities, his interests in mental health and the work of the American Red Cross, and to his general interest in the field of social work. The collection has been divided into seven series: Biographical Material and Correspondence, Presentations and Essays, Articles, Fiction Writing, Social Work Organizations, Audio Tapes and Photographs, and Other Materials.
