Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (est. 1906) is the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity that was established by and for African American men. The Theta Zeta Lambda chapter, incorporated on January 23, 1962, is an alumni chapter based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and serves the Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and larger Metro Detroit area. Watson A. Young (1915-2010) was a member of Theta Zeta Lambda and a prominent African American physician in the area. This collection primarily documents the activities of the Theta Zeta Lambda chapter in the larger Ann Arbor-Detroit area, as well as Dr. Watson A. Young's activities as a member.

The Alpha Phi Alpha, Theta Zeta Lambda Chapter records primarily documents the activities of the Theta Zeta Lambda alumni chapter in the larger Ann Arbor-Detroit, Michigan area.

Materials in this collection include meeting minutes and agendas, reports, correspondence, event tickets and planning materials, issues of The Sphinx magazine, and the personal papers of Watson A. Young, who was a longtime member of Theta Zeta Alpha. Also included in this collection are some photographs, mostly of Young's family and various unidentified events he attended, and recordings of speeches given at various Alpha Phi Alpha events.

Scrapbooks containing photographs, dance cards, grade report cards, event programs, objects, and other materials reflecting on the U-M student life and activities. Also, World War I-period correspondence.

The Harry G. Gault scrapbook and loose materials contain dance cards; post cards; a hand-drawn portrait of what appears to be Gault (artist unknown); photographs of past U-M presidents (Angell and Hutchins), 1911-1912 freshman and sophomore games, Adelphi Club, the Eremites Club, the 1912 CAP Night event-a large gathering in which freshmen transitioned into sophomores by throwing their grey caps into a bonfireth, the Griffins, the Michigamua upper class all-campus honor societies, the Sphinx Fraternity, and the Senior Swing Out exercises which incorporates the first wearing of the cap and gown prior to graduation.

His scrapbook also contains photographs of U-M sporting events, dances, the 1915 Lit Class, the Michigan Daily editorial office, and the Phi Delta Phi House. Of note is a non-descript group photograph including Gault (seated 3rd from left) and what appears to be an unidentified man of color (standing 2nd row, 2nd from right). Additional materials include a May 1, 1913 Griffins initiation certificate; a 1915/1916 poster titled Comparative Standings of Sororities and Fraternities and their House Clubs; newspaper clippings, report cards, wartime correspondence, obituaries, and other memorabilia depicting student life at U-M.

The Alice Wiard Gault scrapbook and loose materials include dance cards; programs (including football programs); menus; ribbons; photographs of dances including the 1916 J-Hop, women students, sorority house interiors; report cards; invitations; personal notes; place cards; and ticket stubs. Other items to note include a November 9, 1912 handwritten speech from the 1915 Sophomore Toast (authored by Alice?); newspaper clippings including one titled Sisters Announce Engagement-announcing Wiard's engagement to Boy Kennnedy. The handwriting beneath reads: "As near as I ever came to the fatal step." The scrapbook contains additional memorabilia depicting her life at U-M.

The Inter-fraternity Council (IFC) is the administrative and organizing body for the undergraduate social fraternities at the University of Michigan. Records include meeting minutes, officers reports, newspaper clippings, photographs, printed materials. One bound volume of handwritten meeting minutes from 1912-1930, provides the only record of earliest activities of the IFC.

The records of the Interfraternity Council (IFC) measure 3 linear feet and date from 1912 to 1994, with the bulk of records falling between 1960 and 1994. The records consist of meeting minutes, officer's reports, newspaper clippings, photographs, and printed materials. Despite the range of years covered by the collection as a whole, no one time period is completely documented. For additional information on the IFC, the researcher should consult the record groups under "University of Michigan Fraternity Office" and "University of Michigan Housing Division" and the "University of Michigan Vice President for Student Affairs" at the Bentley Historical Library.

The records of the IFC are divided into five series: President's Notebooks, Fraternity Membership Selection Files, Topical Files, Photographs, and Printed Materials.

Scrapbooks of John Spencer Curtis, University of Michigan footall player 1903-1906 and track athlete 1905-1906, include clippings, photographs of football players and games and other sports, dance cards, programs and other material for musical and theattical performances, fraternity events and other campus activities, also includes material related to Marthae "Mattie' Gibson, Curtis' future wife, from Pueblo Coloroado high school and University of Colorado; also includes miscellaneous papers related to Curtis' later business career and work with the University of Michigan Alumni Association.

The John Spencer Curtis papers include X folders of manuscripts and photographs and two scrapbooks, plus Curtis' football cap with a stylized UM FBT decal.

Volume 1 of the scrapbooks includes clippings on Curtis and Michigan football from The Michigan Daily, as well as Detroit, Chicago, and other newspapers; photographs of Michigan football and track and field, of Phi Delta Theta and other fraternity houses, campus social activities and student organization, as well as more personal photos of Curtis and his friends and classmates. It also dance cards, concert and theatrical programs; pins, and other memorabilia of student life.

Volume 2, which may have been compiled by Mattie Gibson, includes material on Curtis as well as a section on Gibson with items from her time as a student at Centennial High School and University of Colorado.

Volume 1 includes several blackface images related to a U-M campus production of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and the "County Fair" parade of 1905. Volume 2 includes a photo of men in apparent 'yellowface" costume in the Mattie Gibson section.

The manuscripts include a booklet from a 1959 Kansas City Alumni Association chapter banquet honoring Curtis, miscellaneous articles by or about Curtis and material related to his participation in the University's $55 Million fundraising campaign in conjunction the 1967 sesquicentennial celebration. There is also a folder of portraits and other photographs.

Letter, flyer, and clippings relating to his design for the National Ski Hall of Fame, and photographs.

Photographs (negatives only) of Alpha Rho Chi initiation and other activities (1946) including photos of Alden Dow; football games and homecoming decorations (1948); and the College of Architecture and Design (1948) including photos of classrooms and studios. Also photograph, undated, of the Star Cornet Band of Ishpeming, Mich., and photograph, 1918, of "the human U.S. shield" formed by 30,000 officers and men at Camp Custer, Battle Creek, Mich.

University of Michigan graduate (Class of 1923). Served as a lawyer for the U.S. State Department, the Department of Public Housing, the War Production Board, and Special Assistant to the Attorney General of the U.S. Steinberg's student scrapbook contains photographs, event programs, dance cards, clippings, and ephemera. The scrapbook documents his experiences at the University of Michigan. Also included in the collection, a brief biography dated 1964 and a photocopy of an undated article by Steinberg.

Morton Steinberg' scrapbook documents Steinberg's activities on the University of Michigan campus. The scrapbook contains theatrical performances and athletic events programs (including an Ohio State-Michigan football game program); photographs, including several Kappa Nu, Mu chapter group photographs; dance cards; a list of Steinberg's college friends with home addresses; newspaper clippings; identification cards; receipts and ticket stubs, and other ephemera. The scrapbook also includes materials related to Devera Steinberg's activities on the University of Michigan varsity debate team: her varsity debate team photo, a debate program, and a newspaper clipping.

A separate folder contains Steinberg's brief biography dated December 1964 and a photocopy of his article "Only a Free Press Can Enable Democracy to Function" (source not identified)
