Files on individual University of Michigan varsity athletes, coaches and staff compiled by the Media Relations staff and its predecessors. Files may include biographical information, statistics, clippings and photographs. Files for an individual may range from a single item to several folders. Not all U-M athletes are represented in the records.

The Athletic Department Individual Files consist of three series: Coaches and Staff, Athletes -- Men, and Athletes -- Women. The files in each series contain background information, news articles, and photographs of individual University of Michigan Varsity athletes, coaches, and staff members from the University's athletic department. It should be noted that some files do not contain photographs. Also, some files contain compact discs (CD's) containing digital images. The bulk of the files date from around 1960 to 2002, but included are files from as early as the mid to late 19th century, to as recent as 2005. The files do not include members of the club sports teams. The number and extent of files varies by sport and over time, in part reflects varying degrees of effort by the Media Relations staff. Sometimes referred to by Media Relations staff as the "star files", the Individual Files are most extensive for football and basketball, but all varsity sports are represented. Beginning in the 1970 coverage all sports becomes more extensive. After 1982 when women's sports began competing in the Big Ten and management of publicity efforts became more fully integrated in the Media Relations office, the coverage of women's sports becomes more extensive.

The files in each series are arranged alphabetically. (Files have ben received at various times ad are physically arranged in several alphabetical run, but are listed in a single alphabetical run for coaches/administrators, men, and women athletes.) Each of the athlete entries is followed by a code for the sport(s) in which they participated.

Manages the University of Michigan's participation in intercollegiate athletic competition. Governed by the Board in Control of Intercollegiate Athletics and headed by the Athletic Director. Since 1973 has managed women's intercollegiate athletics. Sub-units include Sports Information, Athletic Director, Football Office and various administrative and support offices. The records, primarily from the Sports Information Office, include team rosters, press releases and news clipping scrapbooks, media guides, game programs, and team, individual, and game action photos for all varsity sports and game films of football and basketball. Other material includes scouting reports, 1938-1963, and administrative records from the football office, records of the NCAA baseball investigation, 1988-1990, and miscellaneous publications and promotional material.

The records of the University of Michigan Athletic Department document the participation of University of Michigan Athletic teams in intercollegiate competition, 1864 to the present. The records include media guides, game programs and other printed material; press releases; team and individual statistics; photographs, films and videotapes; development and Fund-raising material, and a variety of accounts, audits and other administrative The records are organized into several sub-groups based on the administrative structure of the department. The subgroups are: Sports Information Office, Football Office, Athletic Director's Office, Development Office, Ticket Office and Business Office. The Sports Information Office sub-group constitutes by far the largest portion of the Athletic Department records and includes series for each of the varsity sports.

The Bennie G. Oosterbaan collection documents his career as athlete and coach at the University of Michigan, especially his time as head football coach. The collection is comprised of the following series: Correspondence; Papers collected from different period of his career; Miscellaneous; Scrapbooks; and Photographs. The collection relates to his career at the University of Michigan, especially as football coach.

Student papers, 1930-1987 prepared for classes in history at the University of Michigan (primarily Michigan history class taught by Lewis G. VanderVelde, but also including research papers for classes taught by Sidney Fine and others); topics concern Michigan social and political history; Michigan biography and bibliography; and local community history.

The student papers are organized alphabetically by author in two series, which are similar in date range and topics covered. Topics of papers concern Michigan social and political history; Michigan biography and bibliography; local community history and University of Michigan history. A topical index to the papers is available in the first box of the collection.

Scrapbook documents Pattengill's time as a student at the University of Michigan. It contains photographs of Pattengill with other students and with her family, football memorabilia, programs, dance cards, correspondence, newspaper clippings, ephemera, and various objects, all dated between 1902 and 1906. Loose scrapbook materials that were found inside the scrapbook, housed in a separate box, include cards and invitations, correspondence, postcards, programs and playbills. The collection includes photographs of Pattengill's future husband Austin T. Brant, her brothers Victor and Craig (who also attended U-M), other family members, and members of her sorority Lambda Rho Tau. Also included in the collection are oversize issues of Chicago Daily Tribune and The Inter Ocean from December 1, 1905 describing the football game between Chicago University and U-M.

Varsity athlete, 1921-1924, and head football coach, 1929-1937, at the University of Michigan. Papers include football playbooks, scrapbooks detailing his athletic career, and photograph album of Kipke, university scenes, and athletic events.

The Kipke papers document his career as a high school athlete in Lansing, Michigan; as a varsity football, basketball and baseball player at the University of Michigan; and as head football coach at the University of Michigan. The collection include football playbooks, scrapbooks detailing his athletic career, game films from the 1933 season, a football instructional film, and photograph album of Kipke, university scenes, and athletic events. This collection includes a scrapbook of newspaper clippings largely dealing with University athletic activities, especially football and miscellaneous papers concerning his activities as a sportswriter for several newspapers while a student, including a note from James B. Angell on Rhodes scholarships.

There are also photographs of the interior of Caldwell's room, presumably at the Delta Kappa Epsilon house; as well as a photo of Smith.

Scrapooks and photographs primarily related to University of Michigan football 1914-1916 and the career of John Maulbetsch, All-American halfback in 1914 and Michigan team captain in 1916, with some material on campus social life and the Maulaubetsch family. One of 1914 scrapbooks mainly relating to football, was compiled by Ida E. Cappon, Maubetsch's future wife

Scrapbooks containing clippings and photographs largely relating to the University of Michigan football team, 1914-1916, also game programs and other athletics memorabilia, as well material relating to Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and campus social life. The scrapbooks include extensive coverage of the 1914 Harvard and Penn games in which Maulbetsch starred and gained a national reputation. The photos include formal and informal team photographs, posed shots of individual players, and game action images. Many of the scrapbook photographs have annotations and comments by Maulbetsch. One of 1914 scrapbooks mainly relating to football, was compiled by Ida E. Cappon, Maubetsch's future wife. The 1911-1912 volume documents his one year on the Adrian College football team. The 1950 scrapbook consists of letters, telegrams, and sympathy cards to Ida Cappon Maulbetsch following her husband's death. The Photographs series includes additional football photos (including an Ann Arbor High School photo and an Adrian College team photo), portraits and family photos, and photos of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house (then located at 621 S. State St.)
