The collection has been arranged into two series: Correspondence and Other papers. The correspondence dates from 1853 to 1933 and includes many letters addressed to his second wife Elizabeth Clark prior to their marriage. The Other Papers series concerns his activities as an educator and college president. Materials in this series include addresses, lectures, autobiographical and biographical volumes, personal account books, visual material, and other miscellaneous notebooks.

Professor of conservation and conservation education at the University of Michigan. Professional papers.

The Richard Weaver papers relate to his activities as college naturalist at Dartmouth College; as project leader of the National Association of Biology Teachers' program to increase emphasis on teaching of conservation in schools. There are also files concerning interest in conservation education and his participation in conservation workshops and conferences in the United States and abroad in Pakistan in 1961. Norris family of Ypsilanti and Grand Rapids, Michigan. Papers of Mark Norris, Ypsilanti businessman and postmaster; papers of his wife, Roccena Vaill Norris, local teacher and woman's rights advocate; papers of their son, Lyman, attorney and regent of the University of Michigan, 1883-1884; papers of Lyman's son, Mark Norris, Grand Rapids attorney and Grand Master of the Knights Templar in the United States; papers of Lyman's daughter Maria Norris, Grand Rapids physician; papers of Mark's son, Abbott Norris; and related papers of other family members, notably the Whittelsey family of Connecticut.

The Norris family papers consists of three linear feet of correspondence, business papers, and scrapbooks. The bulk of the papers are letters among various family members which contain a wealth of information about 19th century daily life, social conditions, business affairs, and local and state politics. This collection is especially useful in researching: women's history; Norris family and kinship interrelationships; early area settlement and local history; university student life at the University of Michigan and elsewhere; 19th century economic conditions and political issues; and 20th century Freemasonry.

The papers of Loren Barritt consist primarily of materials related to his career as a professor of education at the University of Michigan School of Education from 1964 to 2000. Records include correspondence with colleagues, papers presented at professional meetings, research proposals and reports, grant and fellowship applications, materials related to committees on which Barritt served, and newsletters. They document his research interests in educational testing and measurement, language development and testing, European (particularly Dutch) approaches to education and research, and educational psychology.

The Laird Bell collection consists of a single series of Personal and Professional papers. Included are speeches, articles, written, and subject files pertaining to his various organizational activities, especially his work as alternate U. S. delegate to 10th Assembly of the United Nations in 1955. There are also various material pertaining to the life of his grandfather, Wisconsin lumberman, W. H. Laird.

Assistant secretary, 1914-1931, and controller, 1931-1944, of the University of Michigan. Correspondence, financial reports and studies, speeches, articles, and other papers relating to the business office of the University, the American Council on Education, and the General Education Board; also financial studies on various colleges and educational institutes.

The collection includes correspondence, speeches, and other materials relating to his career in Kansas and at the University of Michigan. Some of the files relate to his activities with the Association of Business Officers of the State Universities and College of the Middle West. There are a few photographic portraits.

Democratic congressman from Michigan, member of the House committees on Education and Labor, Interior and Insular Affairs, Budget, and the Joint Committee on Congressional Operations; and chairman of the Democratic Study Group, 1967-1968, and chairman of the Democratic Party Commission on Rules, 1969-1972. Congressional files, political files, Democratic Party materials; photographs; and post-congressional materials.

The James G. O'Hara Papers, 1958-1987, comprise 53.5 linear feet of material documenting his career as a member of Congress, his 1976 campaign for the Senate nomination, his service on various commissions and committees of the national Democratic Party, and his various activities and interests after leaving the House of Representatives. The collection has been organized in two subgroups: Congressional Papers and Post-Congressional Activities with most of the papers accumulated during his years in Congress. The papers include correspondence, staff memoranda and background papers, speeches, press releases, campaign brochures and literature, texts of bills sponsored or co-sponsored by O'Hara, transcripts of hearings and minutes of meetings, a diary kept by O'Hara from April to August 1969, newspaper clippings, photographs, audio and video tapes, and scrapbooks.

The James B. Edmonson collection contains material relating to the career and personal interests of this educator. The collection is organized in five series: Biographical/Personal containing biographical sketches, bibliographies, photographs, and files relating to his involvement with the University of Michigan Presbyterian Corporation; Topical files consisting mainly of writings by Edmonson, correspondence, reports, essays, and other materials on education related subjects, including intercollegiate athletics, the Canada-United States Committee on Education, so-called "diploma mills", and issues affecting secondary school education; selection of term reports from classes taught by Edmonson; textbooks and other publications of Edmonson; and files, 1942-1945, relating to his work with the University War Board

Professor of community and adult education at the University of Michigan; correspondence, writings, teaching material, subject files relating in part to his university activities, the Adult Education Association, and the American Youth Commission; also photographs and sound tapes.

The papers of Howard Yale McClusky span the years 1921 to 1982. They include correspondence, clippings, bibliographies, speaking notes, reports, teaching material, minutes, photographs, and sound tapes. The bulk of the-papers are the files he kept in his office in the Department of Community and Adult Education. Every important aspect of McClusky's professional career is documented. His non-professional interests--such as his work with religious groups--and his personal life are only lightly touched upon in the collection.

The arrangement has tried to respect the original order of the papers. However, in order to highlight McClusky's most important commitments, some material was removed from his "Topical File" and consolidated into separate series. Respecting original order meant, among other things, leaving correspondence scattered throughout the collection in different subject folders. Only loose letters or folders composed entirely of letters were grouped in the Correspondence series.
