Charles W. Brashares papers, 1912-1972

Pastor of the First Methodist Church of Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1934-1944, later Methodist Episcopal Bishop of the Des Moines, Iowa area and the Chicago, Illinois area. Correspondence, newspaper clippings, and topical files, and miscellanea concerning his; and photographs.

The Brashares collection includes correspondence and topical files relating in part to his pastoral responsibilities, to his work as delegate to the 2nd Assembly of the World Council of Churches, and to his engagement with various social problems. There is some correspondence with G. Bromley Oxnam concerning his appearance before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1953.

Charles William Carpenter Papers, 1909-1970

Graduate of Tuskegee Institute in 1909, later pastor of the Second Baptist Church of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Correspondence, including letters from Mr. and Mrs. Booker T. Washington, 1909-1915; and miscellaneous sermons, prayers, church bulletins, reports of the Second Baptist Church and other materials concerning his work with the Ann Arbor Human Relations Commission, the Citizens Advisory Committee for a Workable Program, and the Ann Arbor Bus Committee.

The Carpenter collection includes correspondence, files relating to his community interests and involvements, sermons and prayers, files detailing his services with Second Baptist Church, and photographs.

French family papers, circa 1908-1966

Files of J. Leslie French, Presbyterian clergyman, and first campus minister at the University of Michigan Tappan Hall Presbyterian Association; and papers of his wife, Edna Cumming French, largely concerning her involvement in the Alumnae Council's fundraising for the construction of the Women's League.

The French family collection consists primarily of the papers of J. Leslie French with a scattering of other materials of his wife Edna Cumming French. The J. Leslie French materials relate to the period when he was University Pastor for Presbyterian Students at the University of Michigan. The Edna French papers pertain to University of Michigan alumnae activities, notably her involvement in fund raising for the construction of the Women's League building.

Methodist clergyman and author; pastor of the Ann Arbor (Mich.) First United Methodist Church. Drafts and galleys of books and articles, correspondence relating to writings and printed sermons.

The collection is comprised almost entirely of drafts of his writings and other materials relating to publication of his writings. There is also an extensive run of his published sermons.

J. Edgar Edwards Papers, 1938-1973

Minister and director of the Guild House, Ann Arbor, Michigan, religious cooperative. Sermons, prayers, addresses, poetry, course notes from Union Theological Seminary, and marriage ceremonies; also papers concerning the 1965 and 1967 teach-ins at the University of Michigan on the war in Vietnam, draft counseling, conscientious objection, Students for a Democratic Society and other political groups, and miscellanea.

The collection contains sermons (1941-1973) which deal primarily with the church's and the individual's role in society. Also included are Edward's class notes and papers from the Union Theological Seminary, lecture notes for the various courses on non-violence and other subjects which Edwards taught, and marriage programs including the vows written by individual couples. The papers include pamphlets, newsletters, notebooks, and clippings designed to assist in counseling conscientious objectors. Edwards participated in the Vietnam War teach-ins of 1965 and 1967, addressing the meetings both times. Material of the Students for a Democratic Society and other radical political groups are included.

John A. Woods papers, 1932-1989 (majority within 1970-1989)

African Methodist Episcopal pastor with churches in Albion and Ann Arbor, Michigan. Collection includes sermons, biographical materials, materials related to history of the church, scattered minutes of meetings, newspaper clippings, and photographs.

The John A. Woods papers measure 1.75 linear feet. The majority of the collection consists of sermons (1.5 linear feet). Because most of the sermons are undated, their original order has been retained. Other significant files concern Bethel AME Church. An audio cassette captures the groundbreaking ceremonies for the new church in 1971, and a program documents the Burn the Mortgage Celebration service in 1989. Also found in the collection are miscellaneous church meetings minutes, dated 1982 and 1987.

The Biographical Materials folder includes biographical information about Reverend Woods, as well as letters of recommendation and/or appreciation, and tributes. Of importance are old school records, pastoral certificates and the program from Reverend Wood's funeral service on November 14, 1989. The Newspaper Clippings folder also contains a wealth of biographical information about Reverend Woods. Photographs date from circa 1930 and include images of Reverend Woods from a young man onwards, and pictures of groundbreaking and the completed Bethel AME Church. The Services folder contains programs of various services that took place in different AME churches. Miscellaneous material includes printed religious texts and a heavily annotated 1979-80 DBC Student Directory.

Kennedy family papers, 1860s-1982

Ann Arbor, Michigan family; papers, 1904-1928, of James A. Kennedy, Sr., Presbyterian clergyman; papers, 1925-1969, of James A. Kennedy, Jr., Ann Arbor, Michigan attorney, largely concerning organizational activities; and papers of Mrs. James A. Kennedy (nee Elizabeth Earhart), 1950-1956, concerning her activities in Ann Arbor civic and social organizations and miscellaneous Earhart family materials.

The collection has been arranged into three series: James A. Kennedy, Sr.; James A. Kennedy, Jr.; and Elizabeth Earhart Kennedy. The correspondence of James A. Kennedy Jr. includes letters from Charles H. Cooley, 1926, Edward H. Litchfield, 1938, Chase S. Osborn, 1926-1927 and 1937, and James K. Pollock, 1938. His papers also detail his work with such organizations as the Ann Arbor Rotary, the First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor, the Michigan League for Planned Parenthood, the Michigan Merit System Association, the Michigan Civil Service Commission, the Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce, and the local Republican Party. The papers of Elizabeth Kennedy detail her work with the Ann Arbor Council of Social Agencies and the Community Chest, and other organizations. The photographs in the Elizabeth Kennedy series date back to the mid-nineteenth century and are of the Kennedy, Beal, and Stockdale families.

Theodore R. Schmale Papers, 1918-1961 (majority within 1929-1961)

Schmale, pastor of Bethlehem Evangelical Church [now Bethlehem United Church of Christ]; includes manuscripts of sermons (partially in German); and autobiography,1895,of father-in-law, Johann H. Dinkmeier, describing life in Germany, his immigration to the United States, and his experiences as a teacher and Evangelical pastor. [original and typescript of translation]

The Papers of Theodore R. Schmale consist primarily of his manuscript sermons, most of them dating from 1929 to 1961. These sermons are arranged in three separate sections: chronologically, by topic, and by scripture reference. In addition, the collection contains a small quantity of biographical material on Theodore Schmale, an 1895 autobiography of Schmale's father-in-law, Johann Heinrich Dinkmeier, and an English translation from the autobiography's original German. Dinkmeier's autobiography describes life in Germany, his immigration to the United States, and his experiences as a teacher and Evangelical pastor.
