Established in 1921 as the Department of Physical Education, the department maintained separate programs for men and women until 1970. In 1984 Physical Education became an independent unit. In 1990 the name was officially changed to Division of Kinesiology. In 2008 the Division of Kinesiology was renamed the School of Kinesiology. Records reflect the evolution of kinesiology from a department to independent division. Material includes committee records, curriculum material and topical files.

Spanning the years 1966-2010, the records of the School of Kinesiology (3.5 linear ft.) document the evolution of the division from a department within a school to a distinct degree-granting body. With material from all three stages of the Division's history, namely the Department of Physical Education (1921-1977), the Division of Physical Education (1984-1990), and the Division of Kinesiology (1990-1999), the records demonstrate a small unit's struggle within a large university and its efforts to garner support both from the university and Ann Arbor community. The record group is comprised of six series: Audio Series, Committee Records, Correspondence, Program Development, Topical Files and Website series. These series stress both the evolution of the division and its intrinsic relationship with the Athletic Department, providing students with practical experience in all of the distinct curriculum areas. Although a majority of the records highlighting the development of Kinesiology are held in the Program Development series, this theme and others reoccur throughout the record group.

Detroit banker, alumnus and regent of the University of Michigan; contain correspondence and other papers largely concerning University affairs, including athletics, the Development Council, alumni activities, regental affairs; also papers concerning Detroit city government, Detroit Street Railways, affairs of the Alien Property Custodian in World War I, recollections of University life in 1890's,articles on Hazen S. Mary Stewart served as an events coordinator at the University of Michigan Union from 1974-2015. Stewart's role evolved into a sympathetic mentor and resource for minority students and student athletes within the University. The records consists of photographs, correspondence, and news articles relating to Stewart's time at the University.

The Mary Stewart Papers consists of photographs, correspondence, and news articles relating to Stewart's time at the University of Michigan Union.

Professor of law at the University of Michigan and member of the University's Board in Control of Intercollegiate Athletics. Papers include files relating to his involvement in university athletics, notably as the faculty representative to the Big Ten Conference, as member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and member of the U. S. Olympic Committee; also materials concerning university hockey, especially the Western Intercollegiate Hockey Association; also photographs.

The papers are arranged according to the filing system developed by Plant. The six major series of his records include Athletics at the University of Michigan; Big Ten Conference; National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA); Western Intercollegiate Hockey League; Western Collegiate Hockey Association; and United States Olympic Committee.

Associate professor of kinesiology and coach of the synchronized swimming team at the University of Michigan and national officer in United States Synchronized Swimming. Material relating to the Michifish Swim Club and the synchronized swimming team both as a club sport and varsity sport. Records include meeting agendas and minutes, budget and fundraising files, publicity materials, meet information and results, correspondence, photographs, and motion pictures.

The Joyce Lindeman papers are divided into five series: Michifish, Topical Files, Varsity Teams, Department of Physical Education, United States Synchronized Swimming Incorporated, Photographs and Slides, and Motion Pictures. The contents chronicle the synchronized swimming team's promising rise from club to varsity status, and then the team's unexpected return to club status. The materials also document her work as a professor at the University of Michigan and her involvement in synchronized swimming at the national level.

Republican politician and regent of University of Michigan. Correspondence, 1901-1940, personal and professional materials, legal briefs and letters relating to William Cook estate and other University of Michigan affairs during his regency, 1918-1937; also correspondence while member of University's Board in Control of Athletics concerning University's departure from and return to Big Nine Conference and college athletics in general.

The Murfin papers relate mainly to JOM's activities as regent and as member of the University of Michigan's Board in Control of Athletics. The collection contains information concerning Michigan's departure from and return to the Big Nine Conference and the amateur-professional dilemma in college athletics. The regental material documents such problems as administrative oversight, particularly selection of the president and settlement of the William Cook estate. As member of the Law Club's governing body, Murfin helped to shape the university's case when Cook's bequest was contested by his wife. Although Murfin was influential in Michigan Republican party affairs, he filed his political papers separately and thus they are not included here.

Football coach, 1938-1948, and Athletic Director at the University of Michigan, 1941-1968. Papers include correspondence and other papers concerning his career at the University of Chicago, the University of Minnesota, Princeton University, and the University of Michigan; materials concerning his work and association with the National Collegiate Athletic Association rules committee, 1942-1977, the Intercollegiate (Big Ten) Conference, and the University's Board in Control of Intercollegiate Activities; also include materials relating to University of Chicago football coach, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Ralph Young, athletic director at Michigan State University, and the founding and first years of the American Football League; and photographs.

The Crisler papers document Fritz Crisler's career in athletics, 1923-1978, as a student athlete at the University of Chicago, football coach at Minnesota, Princeton and Michigan, as Athletic Director at Michigan and as a member of the NCAA football rules committee, 1942-1977. The collection is composed of several series: General and Topical Correspondence; Speeches and Articles; Football Material; NCAA Football Rules Committee; Intercollegiate Conference [Big Ten]; Clippings and Scrapbooks; Amos Alonzo Stagg; Photographs and films.

This collection includes a scrapbook of newspaper clippings largely dealing with University athletic activities, especially football and miscellaneous papers concerning his activities as a sportswriter for several newspapers while a student, including a note from James B. Angell on Rhodes scholarships.

There are also photographs of the interior of Caldwell's room, presumably at the Delta Kappa Epsilon house; as well as a photo of Smith.

Henry Hatch was equipment manager for the University of Michigan Athletic Department, 1921-1964. Photographs of University of Michigan athletes (chiefly football players (many autographed to Hatch) and coaches and celebrities, photographs of Hatch at work in the University of Michigan athletic equipment area, photos with the Little Brown Jug trophy, photo album frorm 1947 train trip to Rose Bowl; photograph of Hatch as a child; also photograph (1914) of Ann Arbor, Mich., fire engine next to an interurban car; also newspaper clippings, correspondence (mostly related to his retirement and being made an honorary "M" Club member), and biographical information.

The Hatch collection consists of photos acquired by Hatch over the course of his 44 year association with the U-M Athletic Department. The collection includes portraits and posed action photos of football players, mainly ca. 1940-1955, some of which are autographed to Hatch; photos documenting the football team's train trips to the 1948 and 1951 Rose Bowl games and several Hollywood photos from the track team's 1935 trip to California. There are miscellaneous photos of coaches and players from other sports, posed photos of Miss Michigan 1948 on a ski hill and a 1914 photo of an Ann Arbor fire engine next to an interurban car. Also, newspaper clippings, correspondence (mostly related to his retirement and being made an honorary "M" Club member), and biographical information.
