James Edward Fitting Collection, 1916-1978, and undated

The papers consists mostly of monographs and professional journal reprints on archaeological topics, mostly related to Michigan and/or Michigan native Americans, and also include Fitting's papers, photographic materials, articles and correspondence.

The majority of the collection is reprints of monographs and professional journal reprints on archaeological topics. Also included are some of Dr. Fitting’s correspondence, manuscripts, audio visual materials, and his articles. The collection documents a wide variety of archaeological and Native American topics for the state of Michigan, North America, the Hopewell Site, as well as a few articles on archaeology in China and Africa, and other related archaeological matters.

The collection is organized into the following sections. First, bibliographies, manuscripts and miscellaneous for which the author is unknown. Second, personal and professional correspondence of Dr. Fitting, organized alphabetically by surname of correspondent with a few chronologically organized folders at the end. Third, manuscripts, articles, reprints, and photocopies of the aforementioned materials, arranged alphabetically by author’s surname, giving both title of the article and date of publication. Authors for whom there are five articles or more in the collection beside Dr. Fitting include: George A. Agogino; Fred Dustin; James B. Griffin; Arthur J. Jelinek; Cynthia Irwin-Williams; Kenneth E. Kidd; Donald W. Lathrap; Ronald J. Mason; George S. May; William J. Mayer-Oakes; Patrick J. Munson; John V. Murra; George I. Quimby; George I. Quimby, Jr; and William A. Ritchie. Boxes 8-9 were later additions to the collection and include negatives, slides, photographs, and microfilm of excavations with which Fitting was involved and more of his personal papers.

Copies of many of his books and periodicals may be found in the Clarke Historical Library or Park Library.
