Scope and Content:

The Albertine Loomis photograph collection is comprised of photographs relating to Grand Rapids, Michigan. These include the exterior of Western Union Telegraph Office, a photo of a telephone switchboard, and a photo of parade in downtown Grand Rapids during the Spanish-American War.

Biographical / Historical:

Albertine G. Loomis was born on January 8, 1895. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1917. From 1920-1957, Loomis taught English and journalism in various Detroit public schools. Upon her retirement in 1954, she moved to Honolulu to begin her career as an author. She published several books on Hawaiian history, including The Grapes of Canaan and For Whom Are the Stars? Loomis was the great-granddaughter of of Elisha Loomis, who was credited with setting up the first printing press in Hawaii in 1822. She was instrumental in reconstructing Elisha's print shop in the Mission House Museum. Albertine Loomis died on September 14, 1985.

Grand Rapids, Michigan was established on the traditional lands of the Ottawa, Chippewa, and Potawatomi. Grand Rapids was incorporated on April 2, 1850. It is well known for its furniture production.
