The National Council of Negro Women, University of Michigan Ann Arbor Collegiate Section records consists of a digital copy of the organization's 2017 constitution obtained from their Maize Page as well as digital outreach materials captured from their Twitter account, @ncnw-um. The outreach materials include event fliers, images of students at events, and advertisements for open positions in the NCNW-UM section, among others.
The National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) was founded in 1935 by Mary McLeod Bethune, a Black Civil Rights activist, educator, and national advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. NCNW—whose mission focuses on the organization, empowerment, and support of African American women and their allies—is a national organization with hundreds of collegiate and community sections throughout the United States. As of 2023, the NCNW's programs focus on economic and financial achievement, social justice, health equity, and S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics).
The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Collegiate Section of NCNW, also known as the National Council of Negro Women at the University of Michigan (NCNW-UM), was established in 2001 by Tiffany Buckley and Ebonie Byndon. Officially chartered in 2002, the chapter's mission mirrors that of the national organization while also illuminating issues that strongly affect women of color and increasing the retention of female students of color on the campus. The chapter is led by an Executive Board (eboard), which establishes committees to fulfill NCNW-UM's different goals.
NCNW-UM's programming focuses on community service, political awareness, professional development, and sexual reproductive health. One event that NCNW-UM has organized is the "HIV Monologues & Other Stories of Power" (also known as "The HIV Monologues"), an HIV/AIDS-awareness production aimed at educating students about HIV-positive people and destigmatizing HIV/AIDs. NCNW-UM has also supported events organized by other University of Michigan student groups, such as Black Welcome Week.
NCNW-UM was awarded the Mary McLeod Bethune Award by the Black Volunteer Network in 2013. The chapter also received an award of recognition from the Office of Multiethnic Student Affairs and the Trotter Multicultural Center in 2014 for their production of "The HIV Monologues & Other Stories of Power."
