The collection includes family correspondence, legal papers, histories; Erie’s miscellaneous, autobiography, scrapbook of her experiences at teacher’s colleges, teacher’s certificates; and a scrapbook she collected of newspaper clippings about people in Clio and Genesee County, Michigan.
Biography:
Erie Maud-Mary Richards was the daughter of Caroline Adelia Washington and John Richards. John had emigrated from England to New York (State) in 1866. After marrying on October 23, 1870, John and Carrie lived in Hagersville (Ontario) until 1879. They then traveled to England for three months to visit John’s family. By then, they had three children. Erie was born in England. Upon their return, the family moved to Clio, Michigan, near relatives. Erie attended school through the 8th grade. She then taught school in Genesee, Delta, and Isabella counties, Michigan. Erie attended classes at Central Michigan Normal School, now Central Michigan University, October 1902-1903, October 1904-summer 1905, and 1940-1941, Michigan Normal School of Ypsilanti, now Eastern University of Michigan, 1916 and 1918; and summer courses at Harvard, 1920. She was still teaching in 1956-1957. (This information is from the collection.)
