Biography:
Dr. James (Jim) W. Jones (1952-2017) was a professor of German at Central Michigan University (CMU) from Fall 1988 and Spring 2017. He served as department chair in the Department of World Languages and Cultures, Academic Senate chair, and a bargaining team member for the Faculty Association. Most notably, Dr. Jones was a tireless advocate for the LGBTQ+ community on campus and beyond. He was one of the first directors of the LGBTQ+ Office on campus, and was instrumental in getting domestic partner benefits for faculty. The James W. Jones Memorial Scholarship was established in his honor.
Dr. Jones had been a Fellow in the Western Societies Program of Cornell University and a Visiting Assistant Professor of German and Comparative Literature at Washington University (St. Louis). He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. His publications include articles on German gay and lesbian literature of the twentieth century, AIDS discourses, and literary theory.
