Affirmative Action Office (University of Michigan) publications, 1973 - 1995

Newsletters, brochures, reports and other material published by the University of Michigan office responsible for overseeing campus-wide affirmative action programs and policies.

The Publications of the Affirmative Action Office measures 3 linear feet and covers the period from 1973 to 1994. The subgroup is divided into two series: Unit Publications and Sub-Unit Publications.

Unit Publications include Minority Student Reports, Reports to the Regents and a complete run of the newsletter In the Affirmative.

Sub-Unit Publications consist of materials produced by units within the Affirmative Action Office. These include the Council for Disability Concerns and the Study Committee on the Status of Lesbians and Gay Men.

Affirmative Action Office (University of Michigan) records, 1969 - 1993

Records of the administrative office responsible for developing and coordinating affirmative action programs for women, minorities and disabled faculty, staff, and students. Documentation includes topical files, minutes, reports, photographs and audio and video tapes. This record group also includes records of the Commission for Minority Affairs and the Commission for Women.

The records of the Affirmative Action Office span 1969 - 1993 and document the activities of the office and its predecessors, and provide information about affirmative action programs at the university and the status of minority, women, the disabled and other groups on campus. The records have come to the library in a number of accessions.

The Affirmative Action Office record group is organized into five subgroups: Affirmative Action Office, 1969 - 1993; Commission for Minority Affairs, 1971 - 1980; Commission for Women, 1970 - 1985; Council for Minority Concerns, 1979 - 1983; and Advisory Committee on Affirmative Action Programs, 1977 - 1986. The Affirmative Action Office subgroup includes records created or acquired by the Office. The other subgroups represent various university units that were merged into or whose function were taken over by the Affirmative Action Office.

Equity, Civil Rights, and Title IX Office (University of Michigan) records, 1971-2001

The Equity, Civil Rights, and Title IX Office at the University of Michigan offers resources and ensures university policies regarding discrimination and harassment have been followed. The collection contains affirmative action and sexual assault policies, ADA compliance reports, and other administrative records.

The President's Advisory Commission on Women's Issues (PACWI) records include letters, agendas, meeting minutes, policies, demographic information, and email correspondence from the years 1990-2001 as they relate to gender equity and corresponding administrative policy change. Commission for Women (CFW) records contain a history of the organization, bulletins, memoranda, reports, letters, and publicity, 1971-1996.

Affirmative Action Office records include guidebooks on hiring practices, history of affirmative action manuscripts, reports, memoranda, policies, guidelines for responding and reporting to sexual harassment as well as general publicity, 1978-1996.

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) records include self-evaluation surveys, building reports, executive summaries, memoranda, and policies as they relate to making the University more physically accessible at all three campuses, 1977-1993.

Researchers should note that the language used in the collection surrounding sexual violence and disability reflects the language in use during the period of their creation.

Records of the University Human Resources and its predecessors. University Human Resources plans, administers, and monitors the university policies regarding personnel and employee relations and nondiscrimination. This office coordinates with various executive officers and deans of the schools and colleges.

University Human Resources records (27.4 linear feet) are divided into three subgroups: Affirmative Action, Personnel, and Human Resources and Affirmative Action.

Virginia Nordby papers, 1972-1992

Virginia Nordby was a lawyer and University of Michigan administrator with positions as director of the Office of Affirmative Action, policy advisor to the president, university freedom of information officer, associate vice-president for government relations and associate vice-president for student affairs. In addition to her duties at the University, she served as a consultant for the Michigan Women's Task Force on Rape, and served as the pricipal drafter of the Michigan Criminal Sexual Conduct Act of 1974. Her work largely focused on affirmative action, Title IX and equality for women in college sports, and addressing sexual violence on campus. This collection includes Nordby's files from her time as policy coordinator, her research topical files, other professional files, and photographs. Also included are files relating to the formulation of the university's student discriminatory policy and to her work as consultant to the Michigan Women's Task Force on Rape.

The Virginia Nordby Papers (1972-1992) document the professional activities of Virginia Nordby during her tenure as a University of Michigan administrator and Law School lecturer. The papers have been divided into three principal series: University Policy and Affirmative Action, Topical Files, and Professional Files.

Series one, University Policy and Affirmative Action contains files relating to Nordby's work for the University of Michigan, including research and policy proposals regarding the student code of conduct, faculty and staff policies, and student affairs. Series two contains Nordby's topical research files relating to her university work and other professional work, namely student discriminatory policy, Title IX and Athletics, and Labor issues. Series three, Professional Files, contains files related to Nordby's legal work, consulting, and speeches given outside of her capacity as a University of Michigan administrator.

Researchers should note that the language used in the collection and finding aid surrounding sexual violence reflects the language in use during Virginia Nordby's career. Some of the language in the descriptive notes has been updated to include currently accepted terminology in 2023. All folder titles in this collection are original, and reflect the language in use during Nordby's career. Original folder titles may include outdated or harmful descriptive language. Original folder titles have been maintained to preserve the original context of how the creator labeled their files.
