The Native American collection contains miscellaneous letters and documents concerning Native American Indians in the United States, Canada, and the West Indies, and their interactions with British and American settlers.
The Native American collection is comprised of approximately 125 miscellaneous letters and documents concerning Native American Indians in the United States, Canada, and the West Indies, and their interactions with British and American settlers (1689-1921). Topics range from land agreements, legal issues, treaties, descriptions of travel through Indian Territory, Indian uprisings and conflicts, Indian captivities, prisoners of war, Indian enslavement, and interactions with Quaker and Moravian missionaries. Tribes include the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cree, Iroquois, Ojibwa, Oneida, Ottawa, Kickapoo, Seneca, Shawnee, Sioux, among others, and concern activities in Canada, New England, the Midwest, the South, and the western frontier. Also present are items written in Cherokee, Mohawk, and Ojibwa.

Calling the sheriff to gather Native Americans to help defend Albany." ...call together all ye Indyan men within your county & cause such of them as are able to bear armes to cause to Repair with all convenient speed to his Majties ffort at Albany there to Joyne with and assist the other Indyans of this Province in prosecuton of ye present Ware."Asks the sheriff to make a return to the Secretary's Office and to include names of Native Americans that "shall Refuse or deley to Conforme themselves hereunto."Includes a note signed by Henry Pawling, High Sheriff of Ulster County, attesting to his having gathered Native Americans "and finde the younge men willing to assist … and promise to march towards ye forte at Albany ye next Satterdaye."

Written in French. Contract for the temporary employment of Raphael Beauvais and Nicolas Godé. The men were hired to spend a year in the land of the Ottowas trading on behalf of Perrot and his partnership. Contract stipulates that payment will be made in beaver skins at the current rate of the bureau in Quebec. Perrot’s partnership was financially responsible for living expenses during this year. Contract states that they may bring a gun, six shirts, two hats, and pelts which they may trade for their own profit. Signed by notaire Antoine Adhémar, N[icholas] Perrot, Raphael Beauvais, and Nicolas Godé as well as witnesses Louis Dupied (dit Le Parisien) and Claude Pinard. Addendum dated August 27, 1689.
